The National Weather Service has issued a Wind Advisory for southeast Pennsylvania so our friends at UltraTrax have made the tough call to cancel the event at the Schuylkill Center tomorrow and shift to a virtual event. UltraTrax participants should check their email for details.

UltraTrax participants have 30 days to complete their trek in this virtual event. With the leaves turning we're expecting some beautiful days coming up at the Center and we'd love to see you out on the trails when the weather is looking better. The Schuylkill Center trails are open from dawn to dusk and the Visitor Center and parking lot are open 9am -5pm Monday through Saturday. We hope to see you this fall!

As the only wildlife clinic in Philadelphia, thousands of animals are brought to us, and the financial challenge of providing this free service with rising costs and increased competition for funding becomes more difficult every year. Our 31-year old clinic building is small and our facilities are stretched to capacity.

The Southern Flying Squirrel is a nocturnal rodent species extant to the Philadelphia region. They are small, compact, and have huge eyes that help them see in the dark. The name “flying” squirrel, however, is a bit of a misnomer. These squirrels do not fly, but glide! They have a large flap of skin between their limbs called the patagium. They spread their patagium open to allow them to catch air as they leap from branch to branch- similar to a parachute or hang glider. They can move their limbs to change direction, making them quite nimble mid-air!

Our wildlife clinic is currently raising this trio of Southern Flying Squirrels after they were separated from their mother. They require a specialized diet and hand-feeding from our trained staff and volunteers to help them grow. Lives like theirs depend on our services for survival. Happy first day of fall! We're excited to swing into the season with a variety of fun events, including our popular fall festival, Halloween Hikes and Hayrides!

We're looking for volunteer decorators, crafters, and autumn enthusiasts who can join us on October 20 for a DIY day of fall festival prep including building s’mores kits, carving jack-o-lanterns, creating crafts, decorating, and more! This is the perfect volunteer opportunity to get into the spirit of spooky season.
