Second week of Council session and we’re back in stride! On Thursday I was proud to introduce a resolution recognizing September 2026 as Deaf Awareness Month in Philadelphia and honoring PA School f/t Deaf (PSD) for over 200 years of leadership, educational excellence, and service to Deaf and hard-of-hearing students and families.

Located right in the 8th District, PSD was founded in 1820 and is the third-oldest school for Deaf and hard-of-hearing students in the U.S. For generations, it has provided a language-rich, bilingual educational environment that embraces both ASL and English while helping students build confidence, leadership skills, and a strong sense of community.

I was especially pleased to have Head of School Melissa Draganac-Hawk join us in Council to speak about the importance of this recognition and the work PSD continues to do for its students and the broader Deaf community (see video in post).

Our city is stronger when every resident has the opportunity to learn, participate, lead, and thrive. I am proud to recognize PSD’s extraordinary legacy and its continuing contribution to Philadelphia.

Happy Deaf Awareness Month!

Celebrating 50 transformational projects with Fiesta Schoolyards is a true milestone! 🛝

I’ve been a proud, passionate supporter of this initiative from day one, and sharing this moment was deeply meaningful. It’s incredible to look back at how far we’ve come and look ahead to the next 50 schoolyards.

Thank you, Elaine Lindy, Executive Director Carletta Skipworth, Advisory Member Lon Fredric Palitz, and the entire Fiesta team. Your tireless advocacy and unwavering commitment to Philadelphia’s children and school communities are remarkable.

A special thank you to my colleagues Kenyatta Johnson, Councilmember Nina Ahmad (At-Large), and Anthony Phillips, PhD for joining in the celebration!

Let’s keep investing in our schools and creating vibrant, playful spaces where every child can thrive.

What an honor to join The Faith Fellowship Baptist Church for their Women’s Day service yesterday! Thank you Faith Fellowship ladies, pastor, ministers, deacons and staff for an amazing service and opportunity to praise! The 1st song from the hymnal was ‘He Has Done Great Things For Me’, and I know this to be true!!! Special shout outs to Sister Mary Hunt who received the Genevieve Edlow Faith and Service Award, the featured speaker First Lady Holly Hugston of Neighborhood Baptist Church and my good friend Renee Degree for extending an invitation to service!😀🙏🏽💛

For over a century, Happy Hollow Playground has been a cornerstone of our community in Germantown and Philadelphia’s oldest city-owned recreation center. Join us as we celebrate a brand-new chapter!

Thanks to an $8.6 million investment through the Rebuild Philadelphia initiative this historic space has been completely revitalized to give our kids, families, and neighbors the modern facilities they deserve.

From brand-new play equipment and a sprayground to upgraded basketball courts, ADA-accessible paths, and a renovated activities building, this project honors our rich history while building a brighter future for the next generation.

Thank you to everyone who fought for these long-overdue improvements and made this vision a reality. Let’s keep investing in our neighborhoods and our young people! 🎉🌳
