๐Ÿ’™ Sometimes the most important thing you can give us is flexibility.

At WPSARDC, we can plan for a lot of things. But community needs don't always arrive according to plan.

Someone may need an item we don't have on the shelf. A program may suddenly need additional supplies. Operation: Take Me Home may need support. Or we may discover a need during outreach that we couldn't have anticipated that morning.

That's where monetary donations and gift cards can make an incredible difference.

Even $5 or $10, combined with donations from others, gives us the ability to respond to what's needed when it's needed.

Of course, food, pet food and supplies are always appreciated too. But sometimes the greatest gift you can give an organization like ours is the ability to say:

โ€œWe don't have it right now โ€” but we can get it.โ€

On this International Day of Charity, thank you to everyone who helps give WPSARDC that ability. โค๏ธ

If you'd like to contribute, message us here on Facebook or visit our website to make a donation.

Small donations give us more ways to say yes.

๐Ÿงก TODAY IS INTERNATIONAL DAY OF CHARITY.

Today is about generosity โ€” but more importantly, itโ€™s about what generosity makes possible.

At WPSARDC, donations help us respond to needs throughout the communities we serve.

A monetary donation can help purchase supplies when they're needed most.
A gift card can help us quickly meet an unexpected need.
Donated food and pet food help keep our Food Market and Pawsitive Pet Pantry stocked.
Financial support also helps programs like Operation: Take Me Home, which provides radio-transmitter technology to help locate individuals who may be at risk of wandering.

Sometimes we know exactly what we'll need.

Sometimes the need walks through our door tomorrow.

That's why unrestricted monetary donations and gift cards can be so valuable. They give us the flexibility to respond when someone needs help instead of having to say, โ€œWe don't have that.โ€

Whether it's $5, $25, a gift card, supplies or something from our current needs list, every contribution gives us another way to serve our community.

And while today is called International Day of Charity, the work those donations make possible continues every day.**

๐Ÿงก If you'd like to support WPSARDC, send us a message here on Facebook or visit our website to donate and learn more.

You give what you can. We put it to work where it's needed.

๐Ÿšจ THEYโ€™RE COUNTING ON YOU NOT KNOWING.

Human traffickers are counting on you not knowing what youโ€™re looking at.

You see an employee.
You donโ€™t see someone controlling their ID, wages or where they live.

You see a relationship.
You donโ€™t see the threats, fear or control behind it.

You see someone going about their day.
You donโ€™t see someone who may not be free to say no.

Thatโ€™s how trafficking can hide in plain sight.

Someone speaking for another person. Control over their money, phone, ID or transportation. Fear. Scripted answers. Looking to someone else before answering. Not appearing free to come and go.

One detail can be explained. A pattern deserves your attention.

Human trafficking doesn't always look the way you think it does.

And if you don't know the signs, traffickers don't have to hide their victims from you.

PITTSBURGHโ€ฆ TODAY WEโ€™RE TALKING BEARDS. ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿง”

The first Saturday in September is World Beard Day โ€” and in a city made up of neighborhoods with this much personality, you know Pittsburgh has the facial hair to match.

From Polish Hill to Deutschtown, the North Side to the South Side, over to the Strip District and everywhere in between โ€” every Pittsburgh neighborhood has its own people, personality and stories.

And at WPSARDC, we spend a lot of time talking about the things that connect our communities.

Today, apparently, itโ€™s beards. ๐Ÿ˜‚

Short beards. Long beards. Gray beards. Red beards. Perfectly groomed beards. And those โ€œI stopped shaving six months ago and now weโ€™re just seeing where this goesโ€ beards.

Different neighborhoods. Different people. Different stories.

One very hairy Pittsburgh.

Happy World Beard Day, Pittsburgh! ๐Ÿง”

SEPTEMBER BRINGS ATTENTION TO SOMETHING WE CANโ€™T AFFORD TO OVERLOOK. ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿฉต

September is Su***de Prevention Month.

At WPSARDC, our days may be filled with food, resources, outreach and the programs we provide, but at the heart of all of it are **people and the communities we serve.

And caring about our community means paying attention to the people around us.

The person we pass at the grocery store. The coworker who shows up every day. The neighbor we wave to. The friend who is always laughing. Someone can be carrying far more than we realize while everything on the outside appears completely normal.

There isnโ€™t always an obvious sign that someone is struggling. But sometimes, something just feels different.

Maybe someone has become unusually quiet or withdrawn. Theyโ€™ve stopped showing up or doing things they normally enjoy. Their mood or behavior has noticeably changed. They seem hopeless or overwhelmed. Maybe theyโ€™re giving things away, saying goodbye in ways that feel unusual, or talking about not wanting to be here.

You donโ€™t have to know exactly whatโ€™s wrong to recognize when something feels off.

Thatโ€™s when we ask one more question. Listen a little longer. Take what someone says seriously. And make sure they know they donโ€™t have to navigate a difficult moment alone.

Check on your people. Notice the changes. Listen. Ask twice.

And know 988.

If you or someone you know is struggling or in crisis, call or text 988 to reach the Su***de & Crisis Lifeline.

We canโ€™t solve everything our communities face. But we can notice. We can listen. We can care. And we can make sure conversations this important are never overlooked.

Sometimes being there starts with simply paying attention.๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿฉต

SEPTEMBER IS HUNGER ACTION MONTH ๐Ÿ’›

Hunger doesnโ€™t always look like an empty refrigerator.

Sometimes itโ€™s a parent making one more meal stretch. A senior choosing which bill can wait. A family doing just fine last month and suddenly needing a little help this month.

Food insecurity can happen to anyone โ€” and it happens right here in our communities.

Thatโ€™s why September isnโ€™t just about bringing awareness to hunger.

Itโ€™s Hunger ACTION Month.

And action can start with something as simple as adding a few extra items to your grocery cart.

WPSARDC is accepting food donations at:
1405 Frey Rd.
Penn Hills, PA 15235

๐Ÿฅซ๐Ÿฅ›๐Ÿฅฉ๐Ÿฅ• Our Pittsburgh location is equipped with refrigerators, coolers and freezers, so we can accept **shelf-stable, fresh, refrigerated AND frozen foods.

One extra bag of groceries becomes food we can put back into our community. Enough people adding one extra bag becomes something much bigger.

Thatโ€™s what Hunger Action Month is about โ€” turning what we have into what our community needs.

๐Ÿ’› Learn. Share. Give. Volunteer. TAKE ACTION.

When our neighbors are hungry, we show up.

AS AUGUST STARTS TO WIND DOWNโ€ฆ

Over the past two months, weโ€™ve highlighted Social Wellness and Civility โ€” and thereโ€™s a reason both mean so much to the work we do at WPSARDC.

When youโ€™re out in the community, connection matters.

It matters how you speak to someone.
It matters that you listen.
It matters that people feel seen, respected and comfortable enough to ask for help when they need it.

We can bring food. We can bring resources. We can connect someone with services.

But sometimes it starts with something much simpler:

โ€œHey, how are you doing?โ€

Thatโ€™s where social wellness, civility and outreach meet.

The calendar may move on to a new month, but that part of our work doesnโ€™t change.** ๐Ÿ’›

๐Ÿ“ฑ WAITโ€”DONโ€™T THROW THAT OLD PHONE AWAY.

The phone you haven't turned on in two years could be someone else's connection to the outside world.

WPSARDC accepts donated cell phones, tablets, laptops and other internet-capable devices to help people who may have limited or no reliable way to stay connected.

That could be a survivor of **human trafficking or domestic abuse, an older adult living alone, or someone who needs access to resources, support and the people around them.

What feels outdated to you could give someone the ability to reach out, find help, access resources or simply not feel so isolated.

๐Ÿ“ฑ Check the junk drawer. Check the closet. Check that box of old electronics we all swear we're going to do something with someday.

Have something? Contact WPSARDC to arrange a donation.

The weekend is here โ€” and the Burgh is going to be BUSY!

So wherever the weekend takes you โ€” a concert, a game, a community event, out with friends or just around your own neighborhood โ€” enjoy Pittsburgh and look out for each other.

August may be winding down, but thereโ€™s still time to put a little Civility and Social Wellness into action. Be kind. Say hello. Meet somebody new. Help somebody who needs it.

And with bigger crowds around the city, itโ€™s also a good weekend to simply pay attention to whatโ€™s happening around you. If something doesnโ€™t seem right, donโ€™t ignore that feeling.

๐Ÿ‘€ Remember ๐—œ ๐—”๐—  ๐—ข๐—ก ๐—ช๐—”๐—ง๐—–๐—› โ€” awareness starts with simply paying attention.

Have fun. Be safe. Be aware. And enjoy the weekend, Pittsburgh! ๐Ÿ’™
