412 Food Rescue

412 Food Rescue Food belongs to people, not landfills. Download the 412 Food Rescue app to get started! It's so easy. Retired and have a few minutes to pitch in? Great!

At 412 Food Rescue, we believe that food belongs to people, not landfills. That's why we created an app that automates all the logistics of rescuing retail, surplus food, to make it easy for our volunteers to pitch in. In just 30 minutes to an hour, you can pick up fresh food that's about to get thrown away and deliver it to a non-profit that serves our neighbors facing food insecurity. It feels s

o good to help end food waste AND hunger at the same time! Since 87% of rescued food is fresh, time is always of the essence. That's why volunteer drivers like you, make all the difference. Restaurants, food stores and all kinds of retail food locations often have extra food to donate right near where you live. So many times, claiming a food rescue is convenient, and can become part of your everyday routine. Just download our app today - it's friendly, intuitive and fun! There's no age limit - if you're a parent with kids, bring them along. Enjoying a flexible work schedule? You can find a food rescue that works for you. We are so grateful for our growing community of Food Rescue Heroes all across Western Pennsylvania. Thank you for learning more about us and hope you'll join our movement, too.

What happens to rescued food that needs a little more work before it can reach our neighbors?

That’s where the Good Food Project comes in.

Since 2019, the Good Food Project in Millvale has helped 412 Food Rescue find another use for surplus food that may be too large, too unusual or too difficult to distribute as-is.

With the help of volunteers, rescued ingredients are transformed into nutritious, heat-and-eat meals, while bulk food donations are repackaged into grocery-sized portions that can be distributed through our nonprofit and community partners.

And the people you see here are a huge part of making that possible.

Individuals, families, coworkers, community groups and organizations come together at the Good Food Project to prep, cook, portion and pack food, helping us get more good food to neighbors instead of letting it go to waste.

The Good Food Project is where food rescue, hunger relief and community come together.

Want to be part of it? Join us for a volunteer shift at the Good Food Project in Millvale.

Food rescue is powered by people who choose to show up for their neighbors.

Today, we’re highlighting a few of those Volunteer Voices including our new Volunteer Satisfaction and Community Events Manager, Mark Harrison, who actually started his 412 Food Rescue journey as a volunteer Food Rescue Hero.

Through volunteering, Mark saw firsthand how much perfectly good food goes to waste while connecting with new people and neighborhoods across our community. Now, he’s helping even more people find their place in the food rescue movement.

During Hunger Awareness Month, there are many ways to take action. Claim a rescue through the Food Rescue Hero app or volunteer with the Good Food Project. Whether you have an hour, an afternoon or want to make volunteering part of your routine, you can help keep good food moving to our neighbors.

September is Hunger Awareness Month.

Hunger is here. In our neighborhoods. In our communities. Closer than many of us realize.

And this month, we’re asking you to make one simple commitment:

WE WILL NOT IGNORE HUNGER.

We’ll talk about it.
We’ll learn about it.
We’ll show up.
And we’ll take action.

If you’re with us, comment “I’M IN” below.

Because when our community decides not to look away, we can make a difference together.

We Will Not Ignore Hunger. Are you in?

As we wrap up August and head into September, we’re looking back at our time at Chautauqua Institution and ahead to an important month of conversation around hunger and food access.

From leading a three-day Master Class and a panel on building stronger food systems, to helping launch the region’s first food rescue pilot powered by Food Rescue Hero, our time at Chautauqua brought so much of our work together: technology, volunteers, partnerships and a shared belief that good food belongs to people, not landfills.

Today, 24 partners across the U.S. and internationally use Food Rescue Hero to help connect surplus food with people who need it.

The food exists. The need exists. The work is connecting the two.

September is Hunger Awareness Month. Throughout the month, we’ll be sharing more about hunger in our region, the connection between food waste and food insecurity, and the solutions that can help close the gap.

Because hunger isn’t isolated to one community. Neither are the solutions.

🌟 We’re sending a big thank you to recent corporate groups who have been helping out at the GFP including AVI-SPL! Last week, 8 volunteers from AVI-SPL packed a record number of meals in a day…480! In addition to this, they helped fill grocery bags & load the truck which took them out to the community.

If you are interested in getting your group involved this fall, now is the time to schedule a day! Our calendar is filling up and we are currently scheduling into October and November. Email [email protected] to learn more.

The ice cream was delicious, and the message was simple: everyone here is part of the solution. Last Monday evening on the porch of the majestic Athenaeum Hotel, we celebrated the launch of Chautauqua's very own food rescue pilot. Thank you to everyone who came out and to Mark Wenzler of the Chautauqua Climate Change Initiative for helping make it happen. Want to join in? Download the Food Rescue Hero app, complete a rescue, and become an advocate. It's that easy.

Protecting Food to Fight Food Insecurity: 412 Food Rescue Pilot

Kromha is partnering with 412 Food Rescue on a pilot to help them safely deliver fresh food to those suffering from food insecurity. Temperature and humidity sensors will continuously collect cold-chain environmental data during 412 Food Rescue's operations.

SensorStack AI will collect the temperature and humidity data, and Kromha will analyze it to help 412 Food Rescue ensure food safety, reduce food waste, and provide insights that can improve cold-chain planning and operations. This collaboration demonstrates how data and technology can help food recovery organizations operate more efficiently while ensuring more fresh food safely reaches the communities they serve. Kromha and SensorStack AI both believe that access to nutritious food is a basic human right, and strive to help food recovery organizations operate more efficiently and increase the amount of fresh food that safely reaches the families and communities they serve.

It’s another way we’re using innovation to Keep Food Moving.
