As part of our ongoing commitment to keeping our community safe and healthy, we will be conducting mosquito fogging tonight at 9:00 PM. The Village understands that any insecticide application raises questions, and we share concerns for our native pollinators and natural habitats. Public health interventions are never made lightly.

This action has become necessary following a record-breaking month of heavy rains. With standing floodwaters and ponding remaining in certain areas, mosquito breeding has increased significantly, raising the risk of water borne diseases. The fogging will take place in these areas this evening:

- North Avenue
- Retention pond at end of Buggy Whip
- Pastime Park near the walking path (excluding pollinator garden)
- McKitrick Park
- Jackson Street / Plain City Pup Park
- South Chillicothe Street to Smucker Park
- Madison Meadows open space and ponds

Thankfully, depending on recent weather trends, this may be the final time fogging is needed this season, though we will continue to monitor conditions closely as we enter fall. We also urge residents to eliminate mosquito habitats around your home by removing any standing water.

If you prefer to limit your exposure during the application, we recommend remaining indoors while the equipment passes, bringing pets inside temporarily, and keeping windows closed.

As neighbors and friends, keeping our local traditions alive is what makes our community so special. And of the many great events that have come and gone over the years, perhaps none is as storied as the corn carnival. Why? Because agriculture, and corn specifically, is woven into our community's DNA. After all, Plain City was named for the vast fertile plains along the Big Darby Creek!

As we continue to celebrate America’s 250th birthday, the revival of the Plain City Corn Carnival on September 12 is extra special. It may sound corny, but this historic event has left a lasting impression on our community.

🕰️ A Century-Old Tradition: The original corn carnivals were held over 100 years ago to celebrate and showcase abundant local harvests. Bringing it back for America’s 250th birthday is the ultimate nod to the generations who built Plain City!

💪 Ohio’s Ag Powerhouse: Long before modern industry, our rich soil made Central Ohio a farming giant. The corn carnival honors the hard work and dedication of the farmers who came before us, and those still out in the fields today.

🌽 Bridging Past & Future: The carnival is a celebration of the agricultural identity that defines us. We’re making sure our deep-rooted farming history stays a vibrant part of Plain City's character!

🥵 FYI—Do You Know About "Corn Sweat"?
Beyond putting food on our tables, the fields surrounding Plain City act as a giant climate-control system. Through a process called evapotranspiration, a single acre of corn pumps up to 5,000 gallons of water v***r into the air every single day! Multiply that across the massive fields around us, and local crops are contributing to the muggy Ohio summer weather we all know and love. 😉

From high-wheel bike races and a parade to quirky activities like Bossy Bingo, corny jokes, and plenty of other corn-themed activities, you won't want to miss the 2026 Plain City Corn Carnival. 🎒 Back-to-School Safety Reminders

Tomorrow is the big day! As students head back to the classroom, let’s keep our community safe for everyone, especially our walking and biking students.

Please keep these key safety tips in mind:

🚍 Watch for School Buses: Always stop completely when a school bus has its red lights flashing and stop arm extended.

🛑 Slow Down in School Zones: Observe reduced speed limits and stay alert for crossing guards and children crossing the street, particularly during morning drop-off and afternoon dismissal times.

📵 Put the Phone Away: Eliminate distractions by avoiding texting or calling while driving through residential areas and school zones.

⏰ Give Extra Time: Morning commutes will be busier starting tomorrow. Leave a few minutes early to avoid rushing and reduce neighborhood traffic stress.

👟 Walkers & Bikers: If you are a parent of a student walking or biking, remind them to use designated crosswalks, look both ways, and wear bright clothing.

The raised crosswalk asphalt and concrete is complete and striping will take place tomorrow. In the meantime, exercise caution while driving over the raised crosswalk. The crosswalk is not as drastic as the previous speed bump, but after striping is complete, traffic should still be slowing down and this solution should be a little easier on cars and safety vehicles. Thank you for your patience as we complete this important safety project.

🚧 Crosswalk safety improvements coming soon near Plain City Elementary! 🚸

Ahead of the start of the 2026-2027 school year, the Village will be making important pedestrian safety improvements on S. Chillicothe Street near Plain City Elementary, between Lantern Lane and Villa Drive.

Crews will remove the existing temporary speed bump and install a new raised crosswalk at the current crossing location. The raised crosswalk is a safer, more durable, long-term solution designed to improve visibility and encourage slower vehicle speeds near the school.

Construction is expected to take a few days and should be completed before students return to school on August 20. The start date is weather dependent this week.

🚗 Traffic Impacts:
• Temporary lane closures will be in place during construction.
• Traffic will be maintained in both directions.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work to make this an even safer crossing for students, families, and pedestrians before the new school year begins.

It's hard to believe it's that time already! 🍁

The Plain City Aquatic Center's last day of regular operations this summer is tomorrow, Aug. 19th.

The Aquatic Center will continue operating under the new weekend-only hours through Sept. 7:
🔹 Saturdays: 11 AM to 7 PM
🔹 Sundays: 11 AM to 7 PM
🔹 Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 7: 11 AM to 5PM, Pooch Paddle 5PM to 7PM

We thank everyone for an amazing season and wish you (and many of our lifeguards) all the best as the school year begins!

Whether you're wrestling with an overgrown yard or prepping your house for the changing seasons, we’ve got the gear you need:

🌿 Yard & Garden Care: Push mowers, w**d trimmers, and other lawn and garden tools.

🍂 Fall Prep: Leaf blowers to clear those piles, plus power washers to blast away summer grime.

🔨 DIY & Repairs: Saws, ladders, and a variety of hand tools and power equipment.

The Tool Lending Program is available for FREE to Village residents age 18 or older. Participants must show a government-issued photo ID and sign a tool lending agreement. A 24-hour notice is required.

Farewell and Thank You, Emily!

Today, the Village bids a fond farewell to Emily Shoup, who has dutifully served as our Development Intern this summer through the Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission (MORPC) summer internship program.

Emily joined us with an impressive academic background, having already earned undergraduate degrees in Smart and Sustainable Cities and Economics. She continues to advance her education by pursuing a Master's Degree in Urban and Regional Planning at Virginia Tech.

While we are sad to see her go, we are deeply grateful for the hard work and enthusiasm she brought to our team. We wish her great success in her graduate studies and future career!

📢 Understanding Our Village Tornado Sirens

Following Tuesday’s severe weather and the recent discussions regarding siren operation in neighboring Franklin County, we’ve received questions about how our own system functions. We want to ensure all residents understand how our warning system operates, how to stay informed, and the improvements we are planning for the future.

🌪️ How Our Sirens Work:
Our three sirens (located on Village Blvd, Central Avenue, and West Avenue) are activated by county emergency management officials. They are triggered specifically when the National Weather Service issues a Tornado Warning for our area.

Our sirens are not activated for Severe Thunderstorm Warnings, damaging winds, hail, or any other non-tornadic weather events. On Tuesday, our sirens were activated twice in response to two separate Tornado Warnings issued for Madison County, triggered by radar-indicated rotation near Choctaw Lake and London.

Important facts about our siren system:

✅ Routine Testing: To ensure everything is in working order, our sirens are tested every Wednesday at 12:00 PM, unless severe weather is threatening the area.

✅ Outdoor Alert Only: Sirens are designed as an outdoor warning system to alert those who are working, playing, or traveling outside that a Tornado Warning has been issued.

✅ Village Coverage Only: Our sirens are designed to provide coverage within the Village limits. If you live in the surrounding townships, please be aware that you may be outside the effective range of our system and should not rely on them for alerts.

✅ Range & Limitations: Sirens generally have a 1-mile effective radius. They are not designed to be heard clearly inside homes or businesses, especially during heavy storms when thunder, wind, and modern building insulation can muffle the sound.

✅ Reliability: Please do not rely on sirens as your primary method for receiving emergency alerts while indoors.

✅ Future System Upgrades: As the geographic footprint of our Village continues to expand, we are actively looking at ways to improve coverage. For example, the siren on West Avenue will soon be refurbished and relocated to better serve our community.

⚠️ How to stay safe and informed:

Because you cannot always depend on hearing a siren from inside buildings, we strongly encourage every household and business to have multiple ways to receive emergency alerts:

📱 Mobile Alerts: Enable Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) on your smartphone and download a dedicated weather app.

📲 Village App: Stay connected by downloading the official Village of Plain City Mobile App for local emergency notifications.

📻 NOAA Weather Radio: This remains one of the most reliable ways to receive instantaneous alerts, even if the power goes out or cell service is spotty.
