Chief Fitchett recently had the honor of recognizing the legacy of Port Orange Fire Rescue’s first female firefighter, the late Connie Espirito, during our recent truck push-in ceremony.

In 1977, Connie broke barriers and set a powerful example for future generations through her determination, courage, and commitment to service.

Her sister, Janine Rinaldi, graciously gifted the department a framed article from The Little Sentinel (1977), highlighting Connie’s historic achievement. That article now hangs proudly in our lobby as a lasting tribute to her impact and legacy.

We are truly grateful to Janine for helping us preserve the memory of a true pioneer in our department’s history.

What local heroes—past or present—have inspired you the most in your community?

Training for When It Matters Most

Port Orange Fire Rescue and Daytona Beach Fire Department recently teamed up with the Central Florida Disaster Medical Coalition and Halifax Health to conduct a Mass Casualty Incident (MCI) training exercise.

This hands-on drill simulated a large-scale emergency, allowing first responders to practice managing a high volume of patients while coordinating rapid transport and care.

A key focus of the exercise was maintaining clear, accurate communication with hospitals about patient conditions, all while delivering high-quality care in a fast-moving situation.

This type of training ensures our teams stay prepared, focused, and ready to respond when we are needed most

Port Orange Fire Rescue recently hosted and instructed a 45-hour Aerial Operations Class, with support from New Smyrna Beach Fire Department.
The course focuses on high-rise and elevated rescue operations, critical ladder placement, aerial positioning, victim removal techniques, and maximizing the capabilities of aerial platforms and buckets under real-world conditions.
POFR is proud to deliver high-level training to our region. Working together, training hard, and staying prepared is how we continue to protect our community at the highest level.

TRAINING FOR THE MOMENTS THAT MATTER
Our crews recently conducted confined-space tactical training, preparing for high-risk, low-frequency emergencies.
This type of hands-on training ensures our firefighters are ready to respond quickly, safely, and effectively, no matter the challenge.
Always training. Always ready. Always here for you. 🚒
