Kanopy believes in change through education and information, which is why they have curated a collection of films that highlight the historical social and systemic injustice towards the Black community. This collection includes the documentary based on James Baldwin’s rhetoric, I Am Not Your Negro; the film providing an unflinching look at the Ferguson Uprising, Whose Streets?; and the 3-part series examining racial biases, Race: The Power of an Illusion. Simply go to prescott.kanopy.com , log in, and view the list "Social and Systemic Injustice" located on the Kanopy home page. #kanopy #socialinjustice #diversitymatters #standagainstracism #shareblackstories #librariesrespond #librariestransform #library #prescottaz #everybodyshometown #prescottpubliclibrary

Diversity, equality and inclusion are being discussed among members of engaged families in light of current American events. Literature for children and teens can help illuminate and illustrate these vital topics. Our librarians would be glad to work with you to select suitable books. To access relevant titles that we curated from the Prescott Public Library catalog, follow this link: https://catalog.yln.info/client/en_US/ppl/search/results?qf=CUSTOM_LISTS%09YLN+Custom+Lists%09Equity%09Equity.

After a year of research, planning, and collaboration, the library is pleased to announce the launch of our new website this Friday, June 5. This is not a change to the Yavapai Library Network catalog where you search for items or place holds. The new website is where you'll find access to library news, information, electronic resources, policies, and events, as you do now on our current website.

We did hide a surprise on our site to make your first exploration more fun. Here's your hint: Find an image of our old website and click on it. What do you see? The first three people to find the surprise and contact the Ask a Librarian Desk with the answer will receive a gift certificate to a local business (thank you, Friends of the Prescott Public Library for supporting this fun!)

Many thanks to Sadie Sarti for her imaginative design work; to Kenny Scott, our webmaster who did the coding for a very complex site; and to the website team at the library who put many hours into this project - Sarah, Ruthie, Amy, Rosemary, and Craig.

If you need assistance navigating the new site, please call the Ask a Librarian Desk at 928.777.1526.

"Justice will not be served until those who are unaffected are as outraged as those who are." Author unknown.

The American Library Association states, "wherever it resides, racism leads to degradation. It weakens our institutions and destroys our communities and is one of the greatest obstacles to the American Library Association’s mission “to enhance learning and ensure access to information to all.”"

Libraries--including ours--believe in providing access to reliable information sources as well as recommending literature that provides insight and perspective. To support these goals, we have created a display of non-fiction adult books around the theme, "conversations on racism" and invite our community to learn more about racism in America.

Every 10 years, the US Census Bureau counts all the people residing in the United States. It is important to get this count as it affects the allocation of funding for our community’s public resources (e.g., roads, hospitals, schools), how we plan for the future, and our voice in government. If you haven't already, support your community--be counted!

You can now fill out the census online at https://2020census.gov/

Your Child's Got Mail: Free Books!

Families in the Prescott area can register their children for the Prescott Area Imagination Library (PAIL) and receive a free book in the mail every month from birth until the child’s fifth birthday! Register online (https://imaginationlibrary.com/usa/affiliate/AZPRESCOTT/) for the Prescott Area Imagination Library, an affiliate of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, a nonprofit organization that coordinates the delivery of carefully selected, age appropriate books to children throughout the U.S.
You can register your child online or stop by the Youth Desk on the 1st floor of the library for a registration form.
Years of research and dozens of studies point to the same thing: reading to children from the time they are born is critical to literacy development and academic success. Research also links the presence of books in a child’s home to early childhood literacy. Armed with this knowledge and united by the shared belief that our community should be actively engaged in promoting literacy, Sunup Rotary Club, Frontier Rotary Club, Prescott Rotary Club and the Friends of the Prescott Public Library teamed up to ensure that Prescott children have books in their homes.
Community partnerships brought this project to life. The idea began with the Read On Prescott Steering Committee, a group of early childhood literacy advocates who collaborate to find ways of increasing 3rd grade reading proficiency rates in our community. Committee members reached out to the Rotary clubs, that became sponsors of this initiative, each contributing equally to the cost of providing books to children, with Rotary District 5495 matching those contributions. The Friends of the Prescott Public Library cover administrative costs, and Prescott Public Library staff and volunteers manage the registrations and administrative details.
