Yesterday’s Back to School Bash was a smashing success — and a great reminder that the first day of school is right around the corner!

Mark your calendars for Tuesday, August 18, as we kick off an exciting new school year. Every student in attendance on the first day will be entered into a drawing for some fabulous prizes!

Remember: Beginning this year, all personal electronic devices — including phones, smartwatches, headphones, and gaming devices — must be turned off and put away during the school day. By unplugging from our devices, we can embrace the analog experience: meaningful, face-to-face connections that boost focus, strengthen communication, and build real-world skills.

Let’s make this the best year yet by being Present, Powerful and Empowered by Reading!

Although long recognized as an arts-centered school, Pueblo Academy of Arts is entering an exciting new chapter, with expanded programs, talented new staff, and a renewed vision for the future.

Under the leadership of second-year Principal Efrain Tapia, PAA has grown to more than 630 students. The school's enhanced arts offerings will also strengthen its role as a pipeline to South High School as it transitions into a Fine Arts School.

PAA's respected visual arts program continues under longtime teacher Neely Cardinal, who is joined this year by new sixth-grade art teacher Rachelle Mriglot. After completing her field experience at PAA under Neely's mentorship last year, Rachelle is eager to inspire the next generation of young artists.

"Neely's students have shined under the art spotlight for many years and have found an outstanding place to express themselves in her classes," said Principal Tapia. "Rachelle will provide a wonderful program that helps our sixth graders discover their own artistic talents."

Innovation is also taking center stage in Matthew Gettler's newly reimagined Design Studio. Formerly Digital Arts, the program now gives students hands-on experience creating marketing materials, custom drinkware, stickers, apparel, and other printable products while learning real-world design skills.

"This course will connect with our Student Council and other clubs and activities throughout the school and show our students that anything they can imagine can be created," Principal Tapia said.

Music students will once again learn under the direction of Zoe Pratt, who returns to lead PAA's band, orchestra, and strings programs.

A familiar face in Pueblo's music community -- she currently serves as Pueblo Sun City Marching Band Coach -- Zoe brings enthusiasm and experience to students of every ability level.

"Whether students are learning their first music notes or preparing for a school concert, they'll develop their musical talents through consistent practice and performance," Principal Tapia said.

Joining Zoe is South High School choir director Maxine DiMarco, who will once again teach PAA's morning choir class, giving students another opportunity to develop their voices and perform for the community.

PAA is also introducing two exciting new programs designed to expand students' creative opportunities.

Former PAA Culture Coordinator Molly Bilker returns as the school's new Drama and Creative Writing teacher. She will build the drama program through improv, theatrical productions, poetry, and creative writing, giving students new ways to express themselves on stage and on the page.

Also joining the PAA family is Patti Anderson, who brings decades of experience in Family and Consumer Sciences. Her classes will include sewing, costume design, cooking, and practical life skills, while also supporting the drama program through costume and set design.

"Patti has been a lifelong leader in both middle and high schools throughout her career, and we are excited to have her on our team," Principal Tapia said. "She will also work with her students to support the Drama program in both costume and set design this school year."

With expanded opportunities in visual arts, music, theatre, design, and career-focused creative skills, Pueblo Academy of Arts continues to build on its rich artistic tradition while preparing students for even greater opportunities in high school and beyond.

2026-2027 School Bus Route Information

STA (School Transportation of America) has released the updated Bus Routes for PAA. Their phone number is (719) 549-7217.

If your child will ride the bus, you may select the route pickup location of your choice. The bus driver will provide a Bus Packet, which needs to be signed as soon as possible by the parents/guardians and returned to the bus driver.

During the first week of school, the times may be off by a few minutes as the students and drivers adjust to the new routes. All students will be dropped off at PAA by 8:00 am when school begins.

Students have middle school from 8:00 am to 3:50 pm. Buses will pick up students in front of the school, and students will exit the bus at the location where they were picked up.
Please make sure that your child gets back on the bus that brought them to school. The buses have the Route Number on the side of the bus door.

Once all paperwork is completed, there is a Bus App that will be available and announced, where you can track your child's bus by GPS on your phone.

STA is in charge of buses and is contracted with D60. PAA is not in charge of buses, but we will always do our best to help answer any questions.

Transportation will begin on Tuesday, August 18th, for the First Day of School.

We've been working with focus this summer and are getting closer to bringing the world into PAA through the Arts, Clubs, Activities, and Electives, which will bring energy and real-world experiences to our students.

Our English Language Arts & Social Studies teachers are teaming up to explore the world through communications. In addition, our Science & Math Teams will build logical thinking with inquiry. The Encore/Electives Team will create projects/products for display within our hallways, on our stage, and in our community.

Incoming 6th graders will have variety in their experiences so that they may sample different courses (no schedule surveys needed). Our 7th and 8th graders will be placed in classes based on their interest surveys from last school year.

We have added teachers to our Social Studies Team, Science Team, Math Team, and our Encore/Electives Team, which will also bring our classes to an ideal number to help teaching & learning.

We are very excited and wanted to share this update on our progress with you as we get closer to the first day of school.
