The Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) User Facility is a multi-laboratory, U. Department of Energy (DOE) scientific user facility, and a key contributor to national and international atmospheric research efforts. ARM was the first atmospheric research user facility to deploy a comprehensive suite of cutting-edge instruments to continually measure cloud and aerosol properties and their impact

s on Earth’s energy balance. This strategy revolutionized scientists’ ability to collect long-term statistics of detailed cloud properties and now serves as a model for similar programs around the world. ARM provides:

• Data – Access more than 30 years of atmospheric data gathered from fixed-location observatories and field campaigns

• Observatories – Use heavily instrumented fixed-location atmospheric observatories in Oklahoma, Alaska, and the
Azores, including aerial (crewed and uncrewed) and mobile facilities

​• Instruments – Explore more than 400 instruments that collect data at locales spanning diverse meteorological regimes

• Campaigns – Conduct atmospheric science in strategic locations around the world

• Models – Retrieve large-eddy simulation modeling data, simulations, and analysis tools

• Publications – Discover ARM-related research on clouds and aerosols, their interaction with the Earth’s energy balance, and representation in earth system models.

🚨 New Data Alert!🚨

The Microwave Radiometer Retrievals value-added product (MWRRET VAP) is now available for multiple ARM Mobile Facility deployments, including the pictured 2024–2025 Cloud And Precipitation Experiment at kennaook (CAPE-k) in northwestern Tasmania. MWRRET provides improved retrievals of precipitable water v***r and liquid water path—key variables for understanding radiative transfer in clouds and the atmosphere. Available as .c2-level files, the data incorporate improved instrument offsets and cloud-layer information to enhance retrieval accuracy. 💧🌥️

What can a DOE Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship (SULI) look like? For Cheyanne Williams, a student at Penn State, it meant getting hands-on experience working with real atmospheric data from ARM. 🎈🔬

During her SULI internship at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Cheyanne worked with data collected by ARM tethered balloon systems (TBS) during the Coast-Urban-Rural Atmospheric Gradient Experiment (CoURAGE) in the Baltimore, Maryland, region, gaining valuable experience in atmospheric research.

Wrapping up our recognition of 2026 ARM Service Award recipients, we're spotlighting ARM’s tethered balloon system (TBS) team for its extraordinary year of operational achievement and scientific innovation resulting in important data for the user community! 🎉

Dennis De Smet, Dari Dexheimer, Casey Longbottom, Brent Peterson, Carlos Ruiz, Steven Storch, Matt Tezak, and Rip Winckel of Sandia National Labs completed hundreds of TBS flights across multiple ARM sites and helped conduct the first combined TBS and ArcticShark uncrewed aerial system flights at ARM’s Bankhead National Forest atmospheric observatory.

The team also advanced ARM’s commitment to safe and sustainable operations through Federal Aviation Administration-recognized safety practices and the implementation of a helium reclamation system.

Congratulations to the TBS team and all of ARM’s 2026 Service Award recipients and nominees. We appreciate you and the impacts your work has had on ARM and its users! 🏆👏

Continuing our celebration of ARM’s 2026 Service Award recipients, we’re recognizing the radar data mentor team for its outstanding contributions to ARM’s data capabilities! 🎉 Min “Mindy” Deng of Brookhaven National Laboratory and Alyssa Matthews, Marqi Rocque, and Eddie Schuman of Pacific Northwest National Laboratory were recognized for their collaboration and technical innovation in advancing ARM’s radar data processing capabilities.

The mentors developed and implemented calibrated, quality-controlled b-level processing workflows for many of ARM’s radar systems, creating more consistent and scalable approaches that improve both data quality and operational efficiency. Their work has enabled the first-time release of numerous b-level radar data sets, a major step forward for ARM’s radar data capabilities and a lasting resource for the scientific community. 📡

Congratulations, Mindy, Alyssa, Marqi, and Eddie, and thank you for your outstanding contributions to ARM and its users! 🏆👏

What’s happening between the ground and the atmosphere? 🌎💨 ARM’s eddy correlation flux measurement system (ECOR) helps scientists find out!

The ECOR measures how heat, moisture, carbon dioxide, and wind move between the Earth’s surface and the air above it, providing new measurements every 30 minutes.

ARM congratulates former director James Mather on being named a 2027 recipient of the American Meteorological Society (AMS) Cleveland Abbe Award for Distinguished Service to the Atmospheric and Related Sciences. AMS selected Jim for his “exceptional, sustained service that has strengthened the infrastructure, integrity, accessibility, and scientific impact of one of the atmospheric sciences’ most important observational user facilities.” Congratulations, Jim, on this well-deserved honor!

Congratulations to PNNL atmospheric scientist Jim Mather who has been selected to receive the American Meteorological Society (AMS) Cleveland Abbe Award for Distinguished Service to the Atmospheric and Related Sciences.

The award recognizes Mather’s scientific impact and service to the ARM User Facility. Mather joined ARM in 1994 as a postdoctoral researcher and recently retired after 20 years as the user facility’s director. He will retire from PNNL this fall.

Presented July 21 during the Joint ARM/Atmospheric System Research (ASR) Principal Investigators Meeting, the awards recognize staff for outstanding service and contributions to ARM and its user community.

🎉 Congratulations to ARM’s development operations team, Michael Giansiracusa, David Rose-Franklin, and Chris Vernon from Oak Ridge National Laboratory, on receiving a 2026 ARM Service Award! Announced July 21 during the Joint ARM User Facility/Atmospheric System Research (ASR) Principal Investigators Meeting, the annual awards recognize outstanding service and contributions to ARM and its users.

ARM’s development operations team was honored for transforming how software and web applications are developed, deployed, and maintained at the ARM Data Center. The team’s leadership in establishing scalable, secure infrastructure and migrating the data center’s application stack to Kubernetes clusters has improved the reliability, observability, and long-term sustainability of ARM’s software ecosystem.
