While ICE has been a constant threat across the DMV the last 18 months, the most recent wave of targeted abductions in early August has caused a dramatic increase in the number of MoCo and PG families needing additional mutual aid. Montgomery County Immigrant Rights Collective and other our mutual aid partners have requested that MoCo DSA assist with an emergency diaper drive & fundraiser to specifically meet the needs of mothers, infants, and toddlers impacted by ICE abductions and deportations.

To that end, from now through Sunday October 11th, MoCo DSA will be raising funds and gathering supplies to meet the anticipated needs for the rest of 2026 and hopefully early 2027. There are 3 ways for you to participate:

1) Make a direct financial donation to MoCo IRC’s Venmo account via the QR code or through the link in bio. Please label your donation “DSA Diaper Drive” so the funds are properly allocated.

2) Make an online purchase from our directory through the QR Code or link in bio. Please make sure to purchase our exact requested items specifically for diaper and pull up sizes.

3) Finally, please join us in person on Sunday October 11th between 1:00 and 4:00 pm at The Limerick Pub (11301 Elkin St. Silver Spring, MD 20902). Additional raffles, prizes, and games will be available for in-person attendance! “Admission” is simply any donation of diapers, pull ups, baby formula, and/or unscented baby wipes. Please cross reference diaper and pull up sizes with our directory.

Montgomery County Councilmember Kristin Mink for MoCo (D-Dist 5) has introduced legislation (Bill 38-26) to prohibit discrimination based on citizenship or immigration status. The bill would also allow tenants to terminate their lease early if a tenant is being deported, detained or held for more than 30 days pursuant to immigration proceedings, or if the tenant is facing financial hardship because a member of the household has been impacted by immigration proceedings (for example, the family's primary breadwinner has been deported). This bill is a crucial way to protect tenants and immigrants as ICE detains community members across the region and nationwide, and will provide additional assurances to immigrants who report poor conditions in their apartments.

Our chapter Metro DC Democratic Socialists of America has endorsed Yes On All three to enshrine reproductive freedom and marriage equality and expand voting rights in the Virginia state constitution. -Thursday 9/17- Takoma Park Tenant Forum- join DSA and our partners at the forum to show the city your support for rent stabilization
-Saturday 9/19- join us for our September Branch Social, a bike ride along Sligo Creek Trail from Wheaton Regional Park to Lost Sock Coffee Roasters in Takoma Park. Meet at Wheaton Regional at 9:30AM and plan to arrive at Lost Sock around 11:00AM. You can also just meet us at Lost Sock at that time if you can't do the bike ride!
-Monday 9/21 and 9/28- Leaflet with Unite Here Local 25 at the Montgomery County Conference Center to demand Marriott provide the conference center workers with a fair process to unionize.

On Thursday, September 17, the City of Takoma Park will hold its annual tenant forum where City staff will discuss tenant rights and share housing resources from the City. Montgomery County DSA and partners have been organizing to protect the city's strong rent stabilization law as the City "reviews" the law, join this meeting speak out in support of rent stabilization and ask City staff any questions you have as a tenant in the city.

Check out the many great DSA events coming up over the next couple of weeks in MoCo and the wider DMV!
-Metro DC Democratic Socialists of America will hold their Final Friday Happy Hour this Friday at As You Are DC in Southeast DC. This event doubles as a Fundraiser for the Virginia Yes on All 3 campaign.
-Our Labor Working Group is supporting UNITE HERE Local 25 for three leaflets as the Montgomery County Conference Center as they campaign for a fair process for unionization. August 28, September 1 and September 5.
-Join local band Point of Disorder for a Socialist Sing Along in Silver Spring on the evening of Saturday, August 29.
-The MDC DSA chapter is hosting their monthly new member orientation on Wednesday 9/2 at the MLK Library in Northwest DC. This is a great event for folks new to DSA to learn more and get plugged in.
-We will be hosting our next casual social on Saturday 9/5 when we meet up for brunch and coffee at Emma's Torch in Silver Spring. Emma's Torch trains refugees for work in the restaurant industry.
