🚒 STRUCTURE FIRE – CARROL AVE

On August 27, at approximately 7:50 PM, Sierra Fire and Berrendo Volunteer Fire Department were dispatched to the 300 block of Carrol Avenue for a reported structure fire.

Upon arrival, crews found a trailer fully involved in fire. Firefighters made an aggressive attack and were able to contain the primary fire. The fire did extend outside the structure, involving debris and grass, but crews worked quickly to prevent further spread.

Thankfully, no injuries were reported.

We would like to thank the responding firefighters for their quick and aggressive response.

At approximately 5:00 p.m. 8/21/26, Sierra Fire, East Grand Plains Fire, Midway Fire and EMS, Berrendo Volunteer Fire Department, and USWFS were dispatched to multiple grass fires reported across the east side of the county, including areas near Railroad Mountain Road, Quemado Road, Red Bluff Road, and Mathers Road. These fires are presumed to be caused by lightning due to storms pushing through the area.

Crews located two separate fires and immediately began initial attack efforts.

USWFS: Mathers Fire contained at approximately 89 acres.
Sierra Fire: Quemado Road fire contained at approximately 75 acres

Fire crews worked quickly and cooperatively to contain the fires and protect the surrounding communities.

Please continue to use caution with any activities that could potentially start a grass fire, especially during dry and windy conditions.

On Wednesday, August 19, Sierra Fire, unteer Berrendo Volunteer Fire Department, Elida Fire, and USWFS, responded to three separate fires off Railroad Mountain Rd.
The causes of all three fires are suspected to be lightning-related, following a storm that moved through the area around the time the fires started.

Unfortunately, we were unable to get pictures while on scene, as our priority was responding to and handling the incidents.

We appreciate the cooperation and support of our mutual-aid partners and everyone who helped during these responses. Please continue to remain aware of changing weather conditions and the potential for additional fire activity.

On August 15 at approximately 1700 hours, units were dispatched to the above-referenced location regarding a grass fire believed to have been potentially caused by lightning from afternoon thunderstorms.
Upon arrival, responders determined the fire had burned approximately 500 acres.

Updated acreage:2080

Fire departments and emergency response agencies from Chaves, Lea, and Roosevelt Counties responded, including Sierra Volunteer Fire Department, Berrendo Volunteer Fire Department, Midway Fire and EMS, Dexter Fire & Rescue, East Grand Plains, District 8, Elida Fire, and Tatum Fire.

County resources were released from the incident between approximately 2300 and 0000 hours, depending on their location and operational needs. The incident was subsequently turned over to federal and state resources, which will remain assigned to the fire for the majority of the day to continue monitoring and suppression efforts.

This afternoon at approximately 1540 Sierra Fire and Berrendo Volunteer Fire Department were dispatched to the 4300 Block of Welch Rd in ref to a vehicle fire, during response dispatch advised that the fire has spread to a small out building and the grass. On arrival Berrendo made an aggressive attack and obtained initial control of the fire. Sierra units arrived and started moping up the grass fire and assisting with the vehicle fire. No injuries were reported. The vehicle was a total loss as well as a car trailer and a small out building.

This afternoon, Sierra responded to two separate fires. The first incident occurred in the 2500 block of S Sunset Ave, also known as Sunset Pits, where the City of Roswell initially reported a 3-acre grass fire and requested Sierra's assistance. Upon further assessment, the fire was determined to be a 1/10th acre smoldering and creeping fire in tall weeds, which was subsequently contained using booster reels from brush units during mop-up operations. Concurrently, as the first incident was being resolved, a second fire was dispatched within Sierra's district. The second incident involved a semi-truck on fire on Roswell Relief Route between Second and College. Upon arrival, crews observed heavy smoke and flames emanating from the axles of the trailer, prompting an immediate attack. The fire spread to a vehicle on the trailer, but was effectively managed and extinguished during mop-up operations. All crews cleared the scene without incident or injury.

Sierra Fire responded to a mutual aid request from Lincoln County at approximately 1130 hours this morning regarding an incident on US 70 MM 303. Initially, the request was for emergency medical services for a single-vehicle rollover accident; however, responding units were informed en route that the occupant had self-extricated and the vehicle was on fire. Upon arrival, Lincoln County units had already initiated an initial attack on the vehicle fire, and Sierra units were tasked with addressing the eastern portion of the adjacent grass fire, which spanned approximately one-tenth of an acre. Crews quickly suppressed the grass fire and transitioned to mop-up operations. Subsequently, units were released and returned to their district.
