The Southern Westchester BOCES Center for Adult & Community Services was honored by Alcance Latino of White Plains with a Partner Recognition Award at the organization’s annual Baile fundraiser on October 24.

The Tarrytown Fire Department visited SWBOCES at Transfiguration School. Students were able to climb aboard the fire engine, interact with firefighters and receive coloring books to use at home. Special thanks to the Tarrytown Fire Department for making the day so amazing!

🎉Grateful for the opportunity to visit SWBOCES and see the incredible impact of their CTE (career and technical education) programs! I met Dawson, a senior in Culinary Arts with big dreams and determination. His story is a powerful reminder of the opportunities CTE creates for our students.
BOCES is a true gem in our community. With my mom having taught there and my own experience participating in its programming, I know firsthand the value it brings.

Real-world insights from healthcare pros! On Thursday, students from healthcare-related programs at the Center for Career Services heard directly from two professionals during a healthcare panel.

Omar Stout, a lieutenant at Empress Emergency Medical Services, and Eshka Moran, a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner at White Plains Hospital, shared what the work is really like. Jason Chapin, Director of Workforce Development at the Westchester County Association, moderated the discussion, which covered the panelists' career paths, available training and education, and the implementation of new technologies.

They also offered invaluable insights into their professions.

"In healthcare, no matter what field you go into, you are surrounded by people. You are never alone," said Ms. Moran.

Students also left with a QR code to explore healthcare careers in the Hudson Valley.

Celebrity hairstylist Tina Pearson brought the beauty industry straight to our Cosmetology classrooms on Monday, Oct. 19.

Ms. Pearson, whose clients have included Jill Scott and Naomi Campbell, and her team from Tina Pearson Salon in Edgewater, N.J., spent the morning and afternoon with all three Cosmetology classes. Students watched live demos, including digital scalp analysis, and saw how professional scalp detox products are applied.

Her career advice for students: build your foundation in cosmetology, get as much experience behind the chair as you can, and know that the field opens doors in salons, media, entertainment, product development and business ownership. Her path ran from lead stylist at BET Networks to celebrity stylist, salon owner and product-line founder.

The visit came together through instructor Vanessa Newby, a friend and former coworker of Ms. Pearson. Thank you to Ms. Pearson and her team for sharing their time and expertise with our students.

Several classes of students and their teachers celebrated Southern Westchester BOCES partnership with the Community Resource Center in Mamaroneck, receiving brand new textbooks donated by the CRC.

“Our mission is to empower immigrant families in Mamaroneck,” added Marco Bohorquez, Director of Operations and Programs at the CRC. “What we do in partnership with BOCES is to provide students with important skills for them to be able to succeed in this country. For example, this is hospitality training, so they’re getting the skills they need to apply for jobs.”
Through its Center for Adult & Community Services, and in collaboration with the CRC, SWBOCES provides English language learners with the practical skills they need to participate in the workforce.

The course and textbooks are aligned to federal adult education standards and supported by a federal Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act grant and the New York State Education Department. Adult Education at SWBOCES emphasizes practical skills in all of its programs. Over the course of four months, the Adult English language literacy course provides adult learners with critical linguistic skills tailored specifically for the field where they want to work.

“The whole point of this is to advance their skills so that they’re ready for the workforce,” said Nicole Eschler, Director of Adult & Community Services at SWBOCES. “This class doesn’t start from the beginning with English. It’s focused on what they need to be employed.”

The English language literacy classes help adults across the region gain practical skills needed to find success in the workforce in a financially self-sustaining manner. With grant funding, this program enables adults in our communities to quickly gain the language skills needed to work more and better jobs, providing passionate and capable members of our communities with new opportunities to succeed in needed fields.
