Last week we held a ribbon cutting to officially welcome and acknowledge our NEW “Little Free Library” at the S**o Community Center. We are so grateful that Altrusa International chose our center as their donation site this year. The new lending box is located directly outside of our lobby doors at 75 Franklin Street. You can’t miss the bright blue box! Please stop by to check out what is inside and use this as a place to drop off books that you no longer need. Take a book, leave a book! There will be books for all ages.

At the ribbon cutting, Altrusa generously brought over 100 books to distribute to our Community Center After the Bell participants. Every child went home with a book (and a treat!) that day. Thank you, to the Greater-Biddeford and S**o, Maine Altrusa group.

Altrusa International is non-profit civic service organization that unites volunteers to improve local communities. They take on a lot of projects each year related to community service, literacy initiatives, and fundraising. You will often see them handing out free books at other community events!

Thank you, City of S**o Government Communications Department, for capturing these photos!

This is one of our favorite community events of the year!

Our October spotlight is Lauren Schuyler Giddings! She is often the first line of communication with our department, and the first friendly face you see when you visit our office! She is just one of two people on our front office team. Together they take care of all administrative tasks, program registrations, front office communication, customer service needs, and more! There have been days when the two of them have processed over 200 registrations.

Lauren has worked for the department for 8 years now, and like many of us, she wears different hats. Lauren assists with several programs and special events throughout the year, including the Annual SENIORity meals, summer camp orientation, and Twin City Theater Academy. She has been a pivotal fulltime staff member with TCTA, helping to organize and execute the departmentwide procedures to help the camp run smoothly. She has overseen a lot of the camp’s sponsorship packages, fundraising, and performance day operations. Lauren was one of the SPR staff members to attend both years with TCTA when they traveled to the Junior Theater Festival in Atlanta, GA.

All of our recreation programmers and coordinators rely on Lauren for her creativity and editorial expertise. Her attention to detail is evident in the quality and precision of her work. Lauren helps with all our print communication, documents, and development of new forms. Her new project for 2027 will be creating and implementing a departmentwide monthly newsletter. Stay on the lookout for this early next year!

She brings years of customer service and creativity to S**o Parks and Recreation. We have been so fortunate to have her on our team for the past 8 years. Thank you, Lauren for everything you do!

The parking lot at Cascade Falls will be closed on Thursday, Oct. 8, while paving is underway.

Parking will still be allowed on the shoulder of Cascade Road near the park that features a half-mile loop trail and a 20-foot horsetail waterfall.
We appreciate visitors’ flexibility as we make improvements to the amenities of this unique outdoor space.
