"They were not heroes by luck, by coincidence, or because of their titles. They’re heroes because of who they are, because the same instincts that drew them to public service are the same instincts that drove them headlong into danger,” California Governor Gavin Newsom stated at the ceremony, where we honored 36 heroic state employees for their courageous acts in the line of duty.

Starting Monday, June 15 at 10 a.m., we spotlight some of the most powerful stories of valor. Catch a new profile every day through June 23.

🩸 partnered with Vitalant - California for our first-ever blood drive!

Over two dozen staff members rolled up their sleeves, including five who made Power Red donations, which collect double the number of red cells in a single visit. These contributions can support up to 90 patients in need.

A huge thank‑you to everyone who participated and helped make a difference in our community!

On Dec. 4, 2024, California Highway Patrol Officer Paul Vue raced to Feather River Adventist School after a chilling 911 call reported an active shooter on campus. Two kindergartners had already been struck by gunfire when Office Vue arrived. In less than 92 seconds, Officer Vue was on scene, breaking through a locked gate and running toward the screams.

🏅 Officer Vue is one of this year’s Medal of Valor honorees — California’s highest recognition for public‑sector bravery — awarded to state employees who display extraordinary heroism in the face of grave danger.

His full story premieres here next week, June 15 at 10:00 a.m.

On April 17, 2024, CACorrections Parole Agent Michael Dilger was volunteering as a substitute youth baseball coach when gunfire suddenly erupted near the field. Recognizing the imminent danger, Dilger acted immediately, placing himself between the children and the threat.

As additional shots were fired, he kept the players safely shielded, and when he noticed a child too terrified to move, he ran back onto the field, covering the child with his own body to protect him from harm.

🏅 Parole Agent Dilger is one of this year’s Medal of Valor honorees — California’s highest award for public‑sector bravery — recognizing state employees who perform acts of extraordinary heroism at great personal risk.

His full Medal of Valor story debuts here on June 16, at 10:00 a.m.
