National Night Out was an incredible success, and we couldn’t have asked for a better evening! The weather was absolutely perfect, and we were so grateful to see such an amazing turnout from our community.

A heartfelt thank you to all of our community supporters, sponsors, volunteers, first responders, and friends who helped make this event so special. Your support means more than you know.

One of the best parts of the night was meeting so many wonderful people, sharing conversations, making new connections, and seeing our community come together. Events like this are a great reminder of what can happen when neighbors support one another.

Thank you to everyone who came out and spent the evening with us. We can’t wait to do it again next year!

Your St. Matthews Police Department had a busy weekend on July 3-4 engaging in several area community events.



July 3rd – The first Freedom Fest was held along Westport Road between Chenoweth Lane and St. Matthews Avenue. Although it was a hot and humid day, plenty of people attended, anyway. The block was full of vendors, a band stand, a car show, a children’s play area, plus, displays by the St. Matthews Fire and Rescue and the SMPD who displayed our SWAT Rescue Vehicle and an electric police SUV. In the SMPD booth, attendees found sworn and civilian personnel along with one of our chaplains and a volunteer exchange student from Portugal to talk to. Considering the turn out this year, it is very promising that Freedom Fest will be around for years to come.



July 4th – The annual Independence Day 5K run was held along the purple route near the SM Baptist Church on Grandview Avenue. There were 700 race participants. Members of the SMPD and our friendly, supportive deputies at the Jefferson County SO provided route security and traffic control to ensure a very safe day for the participants. Some runners wore costumes: like a hot dog, a slice of watermelon and we even saw from the American Revolution, the drummers and the piper. There was even a squad of firefighters running in full turn out gear. All runners/walkers past the finish line in just over 1-hour.



July 4th – The SM Fire and Rescue and the SMPD joined the residents of Springlee for their 29th annual neighborhood parade. The SMPD looks very forward to joining Springlee for the 30th parade next year.



There was a lot of red, white and blue showing at all three events displaying pride and respect throughout this all-American celebration weekend within the City of St. Matthews and the members of the SMPD were proud to be a part of all of it.

On Wednesday, May 20, 2026, the SMPD and Baptist Health conducted a joint-training exercise. This training focused on how to handle an infant child abduction scenario from within the hospital. Pre-planning took several months. The exercise tested several layers of response including: communications, dispatching, incident command, response by patrol, detectives, administrators, and specialty units (e.g. SWAT). Hospital personnel and police personnel were able to test their procedures either in a table top exercise for executives, or, via actual response methods by all others involved. This is not the first time that Baptist Health and the SMPD have joint-trained in recent years. The SMPD commends Baptist Health for continuing to test their response methods for the worst possible situations and we will continue to partner with them at every opportunity.
