A mother walked into a small pediatric ER with her newborn. Blood was oozing from the umbilical cord stump.

The doctor on call, Dr. Jessica Kirk, had 20 years of experience. She usually knows what she's looking at within moments. This time she didn't.

Her medical director had one question. Had the parents declined the vitamin K shot?

They had. Within a very short period of time the baby was cold, his heart racing, his blood pressure dropping. He was bleeding internally. His abdomen went firm from the blood pooling inside it. He started to fade.

This is not a rare story anymore.

The New York Times just published an investigation built on interviews with more than a dozen doctors across the country. Emergency physicians. Neonatologists. Pediatricians. Every one of them described treating brain or belly bleeds in babies who never got their vitamin K shot. At least 12 of those babies died. At least 14 more have permanent brain damage. ๐Ÿ“Š

I've watched the myths spread online for years. So let's kill them, one at a time.

โŒ MYTH: "VKDB is so rare, my baby probably doesn't need it."
โœ… TRUTH: It's rare because almost every baby gets the shot. When hospitals in England stopped giving it, bleeding cases came right back.

โŒ MYTH: "The risk is only in the first few days."
โœ… TRUTH: The danger stays elevated for up to 6 months. Late bleeds hit healthy, thriving babies weeks after birth with zero warning.

โŒ MYTH: "The shot causes cancer."
โœ… TRUTH: One small study from 1992 in England raised the question. Every larger study done since has found no link.

โŒ MYTH: "The preservative in the shot is dangerous."
โœ… TRUTH: The amount of benzyl alcohol in that shot is not enough to hurt your baby. Preservative-free versions exist too. Ask for one if it eases your mind.

โŒ MYTH: "Breast milk gives my baby enough vitamin K."
โœ… TRUTH: Vitamin K barely crosses the placenta and breast milk has very little of it. No amount of leafy greens or supplements for mom changes that math.

โŒ MYTH: "It's basically a vaccine, I'll treat it the same way."
โœ… TRUTH: It is not a vaccine. It is a clotting nutrient every single baby is born without enough of.

โŒ MYTH: "The shot has a black box warning, so it must be dangerous for my baby."
โœ… TRUTH: That warning is about rare allergic reactions seen mostly when vitamin K is given intravenously to adults at much higher doses. The newborn shot is a tiny intramuscular dose. Severe reactions in newborns from the IM shot are extraordinarily rare. The AAP still recommends it for every single baby because the risk of bleeding without it is far greater.

โŒ MYTH: "It's a one in a million risk."
โœ… TRUTH: Federal estimates put it as high as 1 in 60 untreated babies bleeding in the first week alone, that's the upper end of the range. For late bleeds, which strike weeks to months later, one in five of those babies dies. ๐Ÿ’”

One shot. Given once. Within hours of birth. That's what stands between your baby and all of this.

Please talk to your pediatrician before you deliver. Ask every question you have.

Then get the shot. โœ…

A routine newborn shot that has protected babies for decades is being rejected by a growing number of parents โ€” and doctors say the consequences can be deadly.

A new investigation found that more families are declining the vitamin K injection given shortly after birth, a simple treatment that helps newbornsโ€™ blood clot properly. Without it, babies face a rare but potentially fatal condition called vitamin K deficiency bleeding, which can cause catastrophic internal bleeding, brain damage, and death.

Research shows babies who donโ€™t receive the shot are 81 times more likely to develop late vitamin K deficiency bleeding, and about 1 in 5 affected infants die. Yet refusal rates have been climbing, with one national study finding that more than 5 percent of U.S. newborns did not receive the injection in 2024 โ€” a 77 percent increase from 2017.

Doctors say much of the trend is being driven by misinformation on social media, where the vitamin K shot is often incorrectly grouped with vaccines despite serving a completely different purpose.

Many people have heard of SIDS, but not everyone knows how much progress safe sleep education has made.

Since the recommendation to place babies on their backs to sleep was introduced, sleep-related infant deaths have declined significantly. Yet thousands of babies still die each year in unsafe sleep environments.

The good news is that safe sleep saves lives. Simple steps, like placing baby on their back, using a firm, flat sleep surface, and keeping the sleep space free of blankets, pillows, and other items, can make a meaningful difference.

Parents and caregivers are invited to join Jennifer Shu, M.D., FAAP, medical editor of HealthyChildren.org, along with infant safety experts Ben Hoffman, M.D., FAAP, and Erin Mannen, Ph.D., for a free webinar about safe infant sleep products at noon CT on June 5. This free session will help families understand which infant sleep products are safe, why some products marketed for infants may increase the risk of sudden unexpected infant death, and how to make safer choices. Before the cookouts, pool days, and lake trips begin - a gentle reminder ๐Ÿค

Water safety is important ๐Ÿ  Drowning is the #1 cause of death in children four and under. โ€œEveryoneโ€ is watching until itโ€™s time to start the grill, grab a drink from the cooler, go the bathroom, etc. Accidents happen quickly, making life jackets and โ€œwater watchersโ€ essentials for young children around any body of water.

Safe Kids > Anything Else.

Wishing you a fun (and safe!) Memorial Day Weekend ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ
