On April 29th the Consulate General of Ireland, San Francisco hosted the AI & Minority Languages Pre-Conference in partnership with Údarás Na Gaeltachta and the EU Office in San Francisco. The event brought together AI innovators, researchers, policymakers, and language communities to explore how artificial intelligence can strengthen languages, advance digital inclusion, and shape a multilingual digital future.
This special gathering in the Bay Area was a mix of fireside chats, lightning talks, live platform demos and keynote addresses covering Company, Academic, Government and Civil Society perspectives. Participants included the EU Commissioner for Startups, Research and Innovation, Ekaterina Zaharieva, the Irish Minister for Public Expenditure, Infrastructure, Public Services, Reform and Digitalisation, Jack Chambers, OpenAI, ElevenLabs, Speechlab, The Cook Inlet Tribal Council, and academic experts from Stanford, Berkeley and San Francisco State Universities. The Pre-Conference served as a curtain-raiser for Ireland's EU Presidency AI Summit and programme of events scheduled for October 2026 and its next iteration will take place on November 5th and 6th in Galway, Ireland. The future ambition is to sustain the momentum around this vitally important conversation.
