This , we are highlighting how EPA field teams conduct water monitoring 💧🔬 to help EPA fulfill its mission in the Pacific Southwest.

Our field crews deploy and maintain remotely powered sondes, a type of probe used to monitor water quality, such as pH and water levels, downstream from contaminated Superfund sites. The sondes transmit real-time water quality data using satellite telemetry 📡 relaying crucial information that guides EPA in evaluating progress in ongoing cleanups and planning for future cleanup activities. 🚰

🌱♻️ : EPA Pacific Southwest recently announced $5.68 million in grants for Tribes under the Solid Waste Infrastructure for Recycling ( ) program!

This funding will support 💪 five recycling and composting infrastructure projects, aiming to build long-term waste management capacity, reduce landfill waste 📉, and create local jobs. 🙌

🌱🎉 Cleanup is underway in South Gate, CA! EPA and our partners at Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) and the City of South Gate are breaking ground at the Southern Avenue Industrial Area Superfund Site to remediate soil contaminated by lead and PCBs. 🏗️

The project will excavate more than 3,000 cubic yards of contaminated soil and restore more than 13,000 square feet of land. Once the contaminated soil is removed, clean soil will be placed and the surface restored. ✨

This collaborative effort with our state and local partners will pave the way for future reuse of this land and help protect the community and reduce the potential for future exposure to contaminants. 💚🙌

Success Story: Bringing Affordable Housing to Rural NV 🏘️

Nevada Rural Housing Authority recently celebrated the transformation ♻️ of a former military complex into 32 affordable apartments in Pioche, NV. 👏

Working alongside federal, state, and local partners, EPA’s Brownfields program supported environmental assessment and Nevada Department of Conservation and Natural Resources' safe removal of hazardous materials and oversight of the contaminated soil cleanup.

Once the site was cleaned up, dollars helped leverage more than $12 million in additional investment for redevelopment. 💚

🚰🎉 The continued in the Pacific Southwest last week as EPA, Los Angeles Department of Water & Power, and California Water Boards celebrated the startup of two new treatment plants at the Area 1 Superfund Site. 🏗️💧

The plants will reduce the city’s reliance on imported water and help contain and clean Superfund groundwater contamination while providing up to 30,000 gallons per minute of drinking water, enough to serve more than 400,000 local residents and businesses. 🌎✨

We embrace this opportunity to come together with our partners in state and local government to help strengthen the San Fernando Valley’s drinking water supply for years to come! 🙌💙

Learn how to protect yourself and your loved ones:

1️⃣ Stay Updated: Find current air quality information on the AirNow Fire and Smoke Map (U.S. Forest Service) and follow Northern Nevada Public Health to track smoke levels. Follow updates from local emergency and public health officials for evacuation warnings or orders ✅

2️⃣ Keep Indoor Air Clean and Cool: Close windows and doors to keep smoke out when temps allow. Set your HVAC or AC to recirculate and use high-efficiency air filters and portable air cleaners if available. Use DIY air cleaners if commercial air cleaners are unavailable 🏠

3️⃣ Limit Outdoor Activity: Avoid outdoor exercise when smoke is heavy. If you must go out, wear an N95® or P100 respirator mask and take breaks. If driving, keep windows rolled up and use your car’s AC on recirculate🚶

4️⃣ Seek Clean Air Shelter: If smoke or heat make it hard to stay safe at home, seek out a clean air shelter or cooling center (such as a library, community center, or other public space with filtered indoor air) 🏛️
