Our mission is to enhance the lives of the people in our community through programs for youth, families & seniors. Today, TEL HI joined the Mission Bay community for the Mission Bay School Ribbon Cutting Celebration as the school's after-school and summer program provider! ✂️

The celebration brought together San Francisco Unified School District leaders, elected officials, community partners, families, and supporters to mark the opening of this new neighborhood school. Mayor Daniel Lurie joined District 6 Supervisor Matt Dorsey, Board of Education President Phil Kim, Superintendent Maria Su, and other community leaders for the ribbon cutting. Guests toured the beautiful new campus, including spaces utilized by TEL HI's Elementary School Academy (ESA) program, and enjoyed special appearances from San Francisco Giants mascot Lou Seal and former Golden State Warriors player Juan Toscano Anderson.

TEL HI is proud to partner with SFUSD to provide after-school and summer programming for Mission Bay School. When students arrive for the first day of school on August 17, our ESA team will be there to create a safe, welcoming space where children can learn, explore, and thrive beyond the school day.

With our Early Childhood Education program already serving Mission Bay families, this partnership creates a meaningful continuum of care as children grow, while expanding TEL HI's mission of supporting the community at every stage of life.

Congratulations to the Mission Bay School leadership team and PTA, SFUSD, McCarthy Building Companies, Inc., DLR Group, Swinerton, and the many advocates, families, and community leaders who made this long-awaited school a reality. We look forward to supporting Mission Bay students and families for years to come!

Nick has been part of the TEL HI team since 2018, working with our youth and families at Francisco Middle School.

❓What does your job entail?

I get to lead and coordinate our afterschool and summer programs, creating fun, engaging, and meaningful experiences where students can learn, grow, and make lasting memories.

❓ What is the most challenging aspect of the job?
Keeping up with middle school math! Fun fact: it's not called PEMDAS anymore.

❓What is your favorite part about working for TEL HI?
The warm and welcoming community. I love seeing everyone come together to support our students and show up for our community in such meaningful ways.

This week, our Senior Program and North Beach Place residents enjoyed a memorable one-hour cruise with Blue & Gold Fleet under the Golden Gate Bridge and around Alcatraz. Thanks to Blue & Gold Fleet's partnership, many participants experienced a Bay cruise for the very first time, despite having lived in San Francisco for years! 🛳️

One resident shared that he's lived so close to the waterfront his entire life but never took the opportunity to go on a cruise. He was incredibly thankful for the experience and said it was something he would always remember.

The boat was ADA accessible and walker-friendly, making it possible for everyone to comfortably participate and enjoy the outing. After the cruise, the group headed to Ben & Jerry's Fisherman's Wharf for ice cream, ending the day on a sweet note! 🍦

This summer, TEL HI’s ESA Summer Camp Makerspace has been buzzing with hands-on activities that inspire creativity and curiosity!

Young makers have built wind-powered cars and tested their speed using a large fan and created edible fuse beads. In the coming weeks, campers will explore tie-dyeing, create found-object portraits, and learn the art of resin pouring.

For the upcoming school year students will be exploring basic woodworking and hand tools, strengthen their 3D-printing skills, and collaborate on a mega marble run to showcase at our next STEAM Day!

These activities are more than just fun, they help students learn teamwork, critical-thinking, and problem-solving skills they can apply in the classroom and real-world situations.

Thanks to everyone who supported the Fund-a-Need at this year’s A Taste of TEL HI and helped make these meaningful learning experiences possible for our young people!

10 cardboard cars + 4 weeks of teamwork = one fun-filled day on Francisco Street 🏁

On Tuesday, July 21, TEL HI's Beacon Summer Program at Francisco Middle School hosted its Second Annual Cardboard Derby, part of the program's fifth annual Cardboard Madness event.

Over the course of a month, teams of middle school students worked together to design and build derby cars using cardboard and other recycled materials. The hands-on project challenged them to think creatively, solve problems, and collaborate as they brought 10 one-of-a-kind, drivable race cars to life.

District 3 Supervisor Danny Sauter helped kick off festivities before students raced down Francisco Street to a crowd of ESA and Beacon summer campers and community members. Afterward, the celebration continued with food, cotton candy, Ben & Jerry’s ice cream, games, and an awards ceremony recognizing creativity, design, and performance.

More than a race, Cardboard Madness allowed students to build critical thinking skills, practice teamwork and communication, and develop resilience as they designed, built, tested, and refined their derby cars —skills that will serve them far beyond the classroom.
