On June 14, 2016, Officer Michael Katherman, who was assigned to the Traffic Enforcement Unit (TEU), was working targeted enforcement with other TEU Officers in the area of North Tenth and Hedding Streets. At approximately 4:22 PM, Officer Katherman was traveling north on North Tenth Street on his police motorcycle. As he approached Horning Street, a minivan attempted to turn left from southbound North Tenth Street onto eastbound Horning Street. The minivan drove into Officer Katherman’s pathway and caused a collision causing Officer Katherman to strike the vehicle and roadway.

Several citizens observed the collision and stopped to assist. One of the citizens used Officer Katherman’s police radio to call for assistance. Other officers soon arrived and with the assistance of citizens, began rendering first aid. Officer Katherman was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Officer Katherman was the thirteenth San Jose Police Officer that died in the line of duty.

Yesterday, SJPD Officers conducted a pedestrian stop on a bicyclist and discovered the adult male suspect was in possession of a loaded concealed firearm as well as narcotics. The suspect was arrested and booked into Santa Clara County Main Jail. While we appreciate his effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by riding a bicycle, we do not appreciate him bringing two very lethal items into our community. Thank you to our SJPD Western Patrol Officers for keeping our streets safe!

Over the weekend, Officers working downtown arrested an adult male suspect in possession of, not one, but THREE illegally possessed fi****ms. While conducting a vehicle enforcement stop, Officers located a loaded semi-automatic pistol concealed on the driver's person with an extended magazine. A subsequent search of the vehicle resulted in the recovery of two additional semi-automatic pistols, one determined to be a privately made firearm (PMF). The suspect was booked into Santa Clara County Main Jail for multiple firearm-related crimes. We love when people visit downtown San Jose to enjoy the night life, but if you decide to do so, please don't come into town with illegally possessed fi****ms. If you do, you'll be spending your night life in a jail cell.

The Closing Ceremony for Saturday Night Lights was one to remember as it recognized all the partners who made this eight-week program possible for the youth in our community. Saturday Night Lights provided middle and high school youth with safe, supportive spaces to play futsal soccer. This free program would not have been possible without the support of the San Jose Earthquakes, and also our very own SJPD Soccer Team. Our Officers volunteered each week to coach these incredibly motivated and talented youth and we are grateful for this opportunity to build long lasting relationships.

Stay alert, stay aware.

The San Jose Police Department Financial Crimes and Burglary Unit has seen a recent increase in vehicle burglaries, with several incidents involving multiple vehicles being targeted at the same time in San Jose.

To help protect yourself:
- Lock your vehicle and close all windows.
- Remove valuables and personal items from plain view.
- Park in well-lit areas whenever possible.
- Report suspicious activity immediately.

Detectives are actively investigating these incidents, but community awareness is key to preventing crime.

If you see suspicious activity, call 9-1-1. If your vehicle is burglarized, do not touch any potential evidence inside the vehicle, and call 408-277-8900 to file a police report. Scan the QR code for more information.

As always, send any burglary investigation tips to [email protected]. Together we can help keep our community safe.

Today the Children's Advocacy Center of Santa Clara County celebrated five years of providing life-changing services to thousands of children and families in our community. The San José Police Department has long shared the same commitment as CAC, and together, have been ensuring that survivors have the resources necessary to heal and reintegrate, while holding perpetrators accountable. That is why two of our SJPD Sexual Assaults Investigation Unit Detectives were also recognized during the celebration for their outstanding partnership and dedication to children and their families. Thank you to CAC for this honorable recognition, and for your compassion and leadership throughout the years.
