We kicked off the month of August with an Ice Cream Social and a discussion about In-Home Palliative Care. We were joined by Donna Watkins of Anew Care and Kristen Jessie from McKay Manor who led us in a very educational discussion. Took a trip to see the movie Young Washington at Studio 10 Cinemas. It was a riveting movie about the early life of George Washington. Celebrated Back to School for Fun Friday as the kids went back to school. Healthy Cooking with Shelbi where she made Chicken and Rice Casserole. Day Trip to the Indiana State Fair where we enjoyed the $2 Tuesday specials around the fair, saw all kinds of animals, viewed some amazing art exhibits, listened to great music at the Pioneer Village, and played a little mini-Golf at the FFA building. It was a nice day to be at the fair. Lunch and Learn about Understanding Dementia with Brad Calbert and Donna Harbison of Guardian Care. Donna is a Certified Dementia Practitioner who has firsthand experience living with a loved one with dementia. We had a Baked Potato and a Hot Dog Bar which included all the fixings. There was broccoli and cheese, cheese and bacon, sour cream and chives, and you could even make a loaded baked potato. Coffee with the Mayor. Donuts sponsored by Blue River Stained Glass. Book club with Pam Weakley where we discussed the book, “Take My Hand,” by Dolen Perkins-Valdez. What a great book! August Birthdays with cupcakes sponsored by McKay Manor. Celebrated Fun Friday with Creamsicles for Creamsicle Day. Our prize table was sponsored by Ashford Place Health Campus. Poi Class demo with Meghann. Poi is where you spin weighted objects. We had so much fun spinning the Poi that we decided to have another class to practice our moves. Meghan was so kind to gift everyone their own set of Poi to take home to practice. Picnic In The Park at Blue River Memorial Park. We enjoyed fried chicken from the Kopper Kettle and music with DJ Moxy. It was such a great day and we had over 80 people in attendance. Scrabble with Erica from Miller’s Merry Manor. Music and a Meal with Hi Way 46 Band. What a great performance! Followed by a delicious meal of ham, au gratin potatoes, grilled vegetables, rolls and a brownie for dessert, What a fun evening. Celebrated Senior Citizens Day on Friday, August 21st. We had each senior put their words of advice for the younger generations on thought bubbles and we added them to our Wall of Wisdom. You don’t get to be over the age of 60 and not have good advice to share from either our own mistakes or by learning some things the hard way. Scams and Fraud Workshop with Woodforest National Bank. We learned a lot about the latest scams and ways that people will try to target the elderly to take their money. It was a very informative presentation. Denim Bracelet with Melissa where they upcycled denim jeans into cute bracelets. Ended the month with a Hat Burning class with Liz Riggs. Everyone enjoyed learning about hat burning and embellishments to come up with unique designs. They turned out great! We are going to show off our hats in September – stay tuned.

Thank you to Andrew from Woodforest Bank for coming to talk to our seniors about Senior Finance. We learned a lot about the different ways that a senior can be scammed, and ways to protect ourselves. Thieves are getting more and more creative these days. Next time you are at Walmart - you will notice Woodforest Bank has a branch located right inside.
