Important information from our Friends at TMA Bucks

As the summer break comes to an end, school buses will once again be a familiar sight on Bucks County roads and the TMA Bucks Community Traffic Safety Program is encouraging all motorists to make safety a priority by remaining vigilant and following Pennsylvania’s School Bus Stopping Law to help protect students traveling to and from school.

The PA School Bus Stopping Law, according to PennDOT, says motorists approaching a school bus with its red lights flashing and stop arm extended are required to stop in all directions at least 10 feet from the bus. The only exception to the law is when a school bus is stopped on the opposite side of a highway clearly separated by a divider, such as concrete barriers or grass medians. Even in this situation, motorists should remain watchful of students trying to cross the road to catch the bus.

“As students head back to school, we want every child to arrive safely each day,” said Carly Wible, manager of the TMA Bucks Community Traffic Safety Program. “Drivers play a critical role by staying alert, slowing down, and obeying Pennsylvania’s School Bus Stopping Law. It’s a simple action that helps protect children and keeps our communities safe.”

According to PennDOT, the penalties if convicted of violating Pennsylvania’s School Bus Stopping Law include a $250 fine and a $35 surcharge to be deposited into the School Bus Safety Grant Program Account, five points on your driving record, and 60-day license suspension. Civil violations (Automated enforcement of failure to stop for school buses with flashing red lights) allows school entities to install and operate a side stop signal arm enforcement system for the purpose of enforcing the School Bus Stopping Law. Civil violations include only a $300 fine and don’t reflect any points or insurance ratings.

TMA Bucks reminds everyone that students are often exposed to traffic while walking to school, waiting at bus stops, or heading to and from buses. Motorists should stay alert, use caution near school bus stops, and always stop for pedestrians or bicyclists in crosswalks.

In addition to watching for school buses, commuters should be alert in school zones, which become hubs of vehicle and pedestrian traffic. Motorists are required to slow down to the posted speed limit of 15 mph in school zones. If convicted, PennDOT says violators face a fine and three points on their driving record.

The essence of collaboration has been on full display behind the scenes! Residents, Borough Staff, Borough Council, and the Mayor have been working together to tackle projects and address maintenance needs throughout our borough. I want to first express my appreciation!

In the borough’s portion of the Sterling Knoll Development, curbs were repainted, and I recently conducted a walk-through of the development to evaluate the condition of storm drains, road surface condition, and signage. That information was brought back to the staff and council so we can identify needs and evaluate future projects.

We also discovered that two stormwater inlet boxes on Main Street near Walnut Street were collapsing underneath the inlet covers. A contractor was contacted, and the aging covers were removed. The structures underneath were rebuilt, and new inlet covers were installed.

Stay tuned as we continue evaluating other sections of the borough and develop maintenance plans for the future.

Friday morning PSA!

This scam continues to steal thousands and thousands of dollars from Bucks County residents. I have firsthand experience investigating this scam.

The Sheriff’s Office will NEVER demand money over the phone. Caller ID can be spoofed to appear to be a legitimate phone call from the Sheriff’s Office. Official communication regarding jury duty isn’t handled through the phone.

If anyone tells you that you need to pay for anything via gift cards or Bitcoin, BEWARE that is a scam!

If you ever receive a suspicious phone call and want to verify its legitimacy, whether it's what we call the “Sheriff’s Scam” or another popular “Grandparent’s Scam,” immediately contact the Hilltown Township Police Department, and they can assist you in verifying if you are being scammed.

Good evening, everyone! I wanted to provide some clarification regarding the upcoming Route 113/Main Street road work.

Per the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) press release, “Local access will be maintained at all times”. This means local residents, business owners, customers, and emergency services will be able to access their destinations.

PennDOT is nearly complete with the Callowhill Road roadwork. They specifically scheduled Callowhill Road to be completed before the beginning of the school year. The reason is that they didn’t want to interfere with access to Seylar Elementary.

Regarding road repair in front of the new Mason Square development. The portion of Route 113/Main Street that was disturbed as a result of infrastructure work is the responsibility of the developer. The disturbed area will be milled and repaved to PennDOT specifications. I expect to have a projected timeline for that to be completed in the near future. I caution, though, that it is typically done towards the end of the project when they are doing the final topcoat in the development. I WILL provide an estimated timeline once I receive it.

Back in January, PA State Rep. Shelby Labs and Senator Jarrett Coleman facilitated a tour of local roadways in their districts with PennDOT representatives. I was able to meet with them and discuss residents’ concerns with the condition of Route 113/Main Street. I appreciate that we are on schedule, as they had promised. This is the first step in the process to restore Route 113/Main Street. More information will be provided in the future as to the next step. Thank you to all of those involved.

In closing, please be patient and courteous to the workers. They are merely there doing their jobs. They are not the ones who determine all the fine details as to what roads get fixed and how.
