Update: owners have been found.

This very sweet and very hungry dog was trying to join a family on Ave L in South Houston. Unfortunately, they already have dogs. Please share, to get this dog home. The dog did have a microchip, but sadly, it is not registered. We are hoping this is not another dumped dog. If no one comes in the next 72 hours, he will be available.

Two photos. Just 2½ months apart.

It’s hard to believe these photos are of the same little Chihuahua.

The first photo was taken when she was pulled from a local animal shelter by a rescue organization. She appeared healthy, with only minor hair loss.

The second photo was taken approximately 2½ months later, after she was surrendered to our shelter. During that time, she had reportedly spent extended periods outdoors, and the effects on her skin are heartbreaking.

For dogs with thin coats or very little hair, prolonged sun exposure can cause severe sunburn, permanent skin damage, painful irritation, and increase the risk of skin cancer. It doesn’t take years for this damage to occur. In some cases, it can happen in just a matter of weeks.

Her story is also a reminder of the value of post-adoption support. Rescue organizations and shelters work incredibly hard to save animals and find them loving homes. Checking in after an adoption can help identify concerns early, provide support to adopters, and ensure that both the pet and family have the resources they need to succeed.

This post isn’t meant to place blame on anyone. It’s meant to educate, raise awareness, and encourage all of us to continue learning how we can better protect the animals entrusted to our care.

Today, this sweet girl is safe, loved, and receiving the care she deserves. We hope her story reminds everyone that shade, shelter, and protection from the sun are just as important as food, water, and love.

Two and a half months changed her life. With proper care, we hope the next 2½ months will change it for the better. ❤️

You may remember the beautiful husky that was hit by a car on hwy 3 in South Houston. We have a rescue that will cover his surgery, but we need a safe place for him to stay after the surgery. The shelter has too many germs, and he will need a long-term foster to make sure he does not get infected. Is there anyone that can help us to save this boy? As in many cases, the owners never showed up. Please share as much as possible so we can try to save him.

A Statement Regarding a Recently Surrendered Dog.

We would like to provide accurate information about a dog that was recently surrendered to our shelter.

The dog was voluntarily and legally surrendered by its last owner. The owner explained that due to the dog’s age and personal circumstances, they were no longer able to provide the necessary care. During the conversation, we also learned that the dog had changed owners multiple times and had been living outdoors in the elements for about a month. Upon intake, the dog was scanned for a microchip, but none was found.

The dog arrived in a frail condition and requires ongoing veterinary care. From the moment it entered our shelter, our priority has been to ensure it receives the medical attention, comfort, and compassion it deserves. The dog is currently being seen by a licensed veterinarian, and all recommended treatments will be provided.

After intake, we discovered that the dog had previously been adopted through a rescue organization after being pulled from a Greater Houston area shelter. The rescue collected an adoption fee when placing the dog. Subsequently, the rescue contacted the Mayor, City Council, and our shelter demanding the dog’s return. We respectfully declined because the dog was legally surrendered to our shelter by its last known owner. Based on the information provided to us, any contractual matters between the rescue and a previous adopter are civil matters between those parties and do not affect the dog’s legal surrender to our care.

We understand that emotions can run high when an animal’s well-being is at stake, and we respect that many people care deeply about this dog. However, we also believe it is crucial to share accurate and factual information publicly.

Our shelter remains committed to collaborating with rescue partners and other animal welfare organizations for the benefit of the animals we serve. Our focus will continue to be on this dog’s recovery, health, and future quality of life.

Thank you to everyone who has shown concern and support. At this time, our energy is devoted to providing this dog with the medical care, kindness, and stability it needs.

We are ready to share Matilda's story. The call came in early one morning a mama dog, and puppy were crossing Spencer. Sadly, the puppy was run over and the driver did not stop. There was a person at the gas station that saw it and called for help. Officer Jones arrived, but was unable to get to the puppy because Matilda was guarding it. Finally she got the puppy and Matilda followed right behind and jumped in the truck on her own. She was very afraid, but no longer barking or growling. Her hair was so matted she had trouble walking. There was of course no microchip to locate the owners and no info came in so we could prosecute for neglect/ cruelty.

We took Matilda to the vet that day. She was sedated and given a medical groom. When we picked her up, we saw the diamond in the rough. The beautiful girl who was as white as snow. Matilda became energetic and very loving, but was very sad as you could imagine.

Then Officers Zubia and Jones remembered meeting a sweet lady from the Ukraine whose dog died and she was looking for another dog like her. A phone call was made, she drove straight there. She met Matilda and heard her story and said she is mine. She bought her beds, collars, leashes etc and patiently waited for her to get spayed.

The rest is history. Matilda got an amazing home, and also an older dog brother who follows her everywhere.

The moral to her story is, don't ignore these babies in this condition. We can't say what her life was like before, but a picture is worth a thousand words. We have saved many like her and will continue to do so.
