🚑 Trauma Training – Understanding Mechanism of Injury

South Kingstown EMS personnel recently completed trauma training focused on Mechanism of Injury (MOI)—understanding how the forces involved in an accident can help predict the type and severity of injuries a patient may have sustained.

Crews reviewed a variety of trauma scenarios, including motor vehicle crashes, falls, and other high-energy events. Recognizing the mechanism of injury helps EMS providers anticipate potentially serious or hidden injuries, prioritize treatment, and determine the most appropriate destination for continued care.

Ongoing training like this helps ensure our personnel are prepared to quickly assess and provide high-quality care when serious trauma occurs.

Training today. Prepared for tomorrow. đźš‘

✂️ Celebrating a New Community Resource in South Kingstown!

South Kingstown EMS was proud to be part of the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new South Kingstown Community Learning Center.

We are especially excited that our Community Paramedic Program will have a presence at the library within the new center, providing another opportunity for our team to connect with residents, promote health and wellness, and bring important services directly into the community.

This beautiful new facility is a great example of what can be accomplished through collaboration and a shared commitment to the people we serve.

We extend our sincere thanks to our federal, state, and local officials, as well as everyone who helped make this project possible, for their continued support and investment in the South Kingstown community.

We look forward to being part of this new chapter and continuing to find innovative ways to serve our residents.

đźš‘ Training to Stop Serious Bleeding

South Kingstown EMS recently trained with TraumaGel, a tool designed to help control severe bleeding from serious cuts and wounds.

When someone is badly injured, controlling bleeding quickly can be lifesaving. TraumaGel is applied directly to a wound to help stop bleeding while our crews continue treatment and prepare the patient for transport.

Hands-on training like this helps ensure our providers are familiar with the latest tools available to care for patients when every minute matters.

Continuing to Train for Our Community

South Kingstown EMS recently welcomed Tim Phalen to provide our team with training on recognizing and treating serious heart attacks.

Our paramedics use 12-lead EKGs in the field to get a detailed look at the heart’s electrical activity. This training helps our crews quickly recognize the signs of a heart attack, begin the appropriate treatment, and alert the hospital so their cardiac team can be ready when the patient arrives.

When someone is having a heart attack, every minute matters.

Thank you to Tim for sharing his knowledge and experience with our team and helping us continue to provide the highest level of care to our community.

As e-bikes and e-scooters continue to grow in popularity, so have the number of serious injuries. Brown University Health recently reported that so far in 2026, Hasbro Children's Hospital treated 143 e-bike and e-scooter related injuries— exceeding the total for 2025.

Our goal is to educate riders and parents to help promote safer riding and prevent serious injuries. We encourage everyone to review the laws below to help keep themselves and others safe:

• You must be at least 16 years old to operate an e-bike or e-scooter on public roadways, sidewalks, bicycle paths, or other public property. (R.I.G.L. § 31-3-2.2)

• Operators and passengers under the age of 21 are required to wear a properly fitted and fastened helmet. (R.I.G.L. § 31-19.7-3)

• On the South County Bike Path, only pedal-assist e-bikes with a maximum assisted speed of 20 mph are permitted. E-bikes equipped with a throttle or capable of assisted speeds above 20 mph are prohibited. (R.I.G.L. § 31-19.7-2 and 250-RICR-100-00-7.9(E))

• E-bike and e-scooter riders are subject to the same rules of the road as traditional bicyclists, including obeying traffic control devices and operating safely.

Please help us spread the word by sharing this message.
