This is a message from the Town of Westerly:

Effective immediately, the Town of Westerly is enacting an emergency water ban prohibiting the use of all residential outdoor water use. This action is a result of recent drought conditions combined with increased water use due to the extreme heat. Prohibited activities include the watering of lawns, filling of pools, and washing of vehicles, homes or decks. The Town is asking all residents and visitors for their cooperation in this effort to restore critical water levels within our system. Town staff will be monitoring all areas of Town to identify any violations of this ban. Those found to be in violation will be subject to penalties and fines. This ban will be in effect until further notice, and updates will be available on the Town of Westerly page, website, and through the newsflash notification system. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation.

During a lengthy meeting at Town Hall on June 29, Town staff, including the Town Manager, were made aware of Veolia's concerns for low water readings at their well fields.
Staff urged Veolia to hold-off with a full water ban until the South Kingstown Town Council and Town Solicitor could be briefed on the situation.
Veolia has determined that the situation required an immediate response and has instituted a full water ban, effective immediately.
Veolia representatives have agreed to attend the July 13, 2026 Town Council meeting to present and explain their data and calculations used to arrive at their decision.

Local photographer Jan Armor made a lovely video ode to the Free Library at the Rose Hill Transfer Station. The library is a volunteer-run community resource that keeps books out of the landfill and in circulation.
