This week, campers in 1st-3rd grade learned all about the history of the Indianapolis 500, hopefully sparking a lifelong love of the race and INDYCAR series.

In the Faces of the "500" summer camp in partnership with BorgWarner, they learned about the Borg-Warner Trophy, made their own trophies out of clay, learned how the wreath is made and created their own, went on tours of the Speedway, and more!

Thank you to our many guest speakers who came in, including Michelle Collins and Steve Shunck of BorgWarner, wreath creator Julie Vance, and Roxie and Jason from our Collections and Exhibitions team.

The 1941 Bowes Seal Fast Special, driven by Rex Mays in the 29th Indianapolis 500, is on display in the second garage of The Heritage Group Gasoline Alley Gallery.

Mays was the reigning AAA champion, returning to the Speedway as both the defending pole winner and runner-up. In the race, Mays led the first 38 laps. But his three pit stops put him at a disadvantage compared to other competitors who made only one stop. He finished second, 1 minute and 29 seconds behind Mauri Rose.

Taking you back to the sights and sounds of the Historic Car Lap on Race Day.

The Historic Car Lap, a pre-race tradition led by the IMS Museum, features historic cars from the Museum’s collection driven by former drivers and VIP guests.

For one lap before the Indianapolis 500, vehicles representing different decades will parade around the oval, introducing the crowd of more than 350,000 to the history of “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing”. The Museum’s restoration team preps all year for this moment, ensuring the cars are in safe working order.
