Here at Merit, our beginning woodshop program gives students practical, real-world skills through hands-on projects. Students learn tool safety, measurement, design, and woodworking joints as they build projects from start to finish. All beginning students start by making a cutting board. They then choose a folding camping chair, a treasure chest, a chessboard box, or a toolbox, or design their own project incorporating the joints they learn in class. Students who take the class again can try another project or design a more advanced one of their own.

Join Woodshop! Talk to Mr. Jenkins in the counseling office.

As part of our astronomy unit in Earth and Space Science class, students engineer a rocket from a 2 Liter bottle. The only tip they are given for their first design is that they need to find a way to stabilize the rocket during the launch. Most students, upon looking at the example, put fins on the rocket and a nose cone. Some realize that they need to add weight to the nose to give it some inertia. As they launch, they modify how much water (rocket fuel) they use to launch the rocket. Too little, and the rocket doesn't gain enough momentum. Too much, and the rocket becomes too heavy to lift itself. After testing and iterating on their designs, some rockets had hangtimes of 7 seconds or more! Congratulations to all our students for thinking outside of the box and coming up with creative rocket designs.
