The Maryland Heights Fire Protection District covers eighteen square miles of St. The district boundaries are Page Avenue/Lackland Road on the south, McKelvey and Old St. Charles Rock Roads on the north, Marine Avenue on the west and Lindbergh Boulevard on the east. In addition to our district, we have mutual aid agreements with our neighboring districts and also provide support on various responses throughout the St. The fire district operates two engine houses and four front-line apparatus. Engine House 1 is located at 2600 Schuetz Road and is home to Engine Company 4414 and Ambulance 4417 and Rescue Squad 4416. Engine House 2 is located at 12828 Dorsett Road and is home to Ladder Company 4425 and Ambulance 4427. Support Unit 4499 (foam, trench and shoring materials, hazardous materials response support) is also housed at Engine House 1. In addition the district also maintains Reserve Engine 4490 and Reserve Ambulance 4497 for back-up purposes.

An overnight vehicle fire off Dorsett involved an electric (hybrid) vehicle, which meant crews had an additional hazard to identify. Command referenced vehicle specific emergency response information, allowing firefighters to locate the high voltage battery and other energized components before working around the vehicle.

That information matters. Knowing where high voltage components, cables and battery cells are located helps crews choose safer access points, avoid unnecessary contact with energized systems and plan the next step before cutting or opening the vehicle.

As vehicle technology changes, the way we prepare for and respond to these incidents has to change with it.

These photos were taken on an actual call and are a good example of why ladder placement matters.

Overhead utility lines need to be considered before a ladder is ever raised. From the ground, it can be difficult to determine which lines may be energized, and simply using a fiberglass ladder does not eliminate the hazard.

Choose a location that keeps the ladder, the person climbing it, and anything they may be carrying well clear of overhead lines. If you cannot maintain that separation, stop and find another way to complete the job.

A few extra seconds spent choosing the right spot can prevent a much bigger problem.

Yesterday, on duty and off duty personnel got together at Vago Park for a family and friends picnic. It was a great opportunity for everyone to spend time together outside of the firehouse and for our families to meet and get to know one another. Crews responded to a rescue on a steep, approximately 200 foot hillside in Creve Coeur Park after an individual suffered a traumatic injury and was unable to make it back to the trail. Bystanders quickly improvised a tourniquet to control significant bleeding before first responders arrived. Maryland Heights Fire Protection District, Monarch Fire Protection District, Pattonville Fire Protection District, and Creve Coeur Fire District crews coordinated a technical rescue operation, establishing a rope lowering system to safely move the patient in a Stokes basket back to the main trail. From there, the patient was transported by UTV, transferred to an ambulance, and transported to a local hospital.

Another successful “Firefighter on the Roof MDA Fill the Boot event”

Thanks to the generosity of our community, our crews raised $1,312 for Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by and donated, and a big thank you to Chick-fil-A Maryland Heights for once again hosting us and supporting our efforts. We appreciate everyone who helped make the event a success and look forward to the next one!
