Today, June 21, we observe World Hydrography Day—an occasion that recognizes the critical global efforts dedicated to advancing our understanding of the world's oceans and seas.
The United States Navy plays an indispensable role in operational hydrography, employing a diverse and highly capable array of assets to execute this mission. Our worldwide presence is anchored by our globally deployed, multi-disciplined T-AGS Pathfinder-class survey ships. Additionally, to operate in the most austere and remote locations, our highly agile, deployable littoral hydrographic survey teams mobilize with specialized portable equipment and leverage vessels of opportunity from our international partners. These efforts are further enhanced by the integration of cutting-edge autonomous surface and underwater vehicles, as well as advanced LiDAR and other remote sensing technology.
The hydrographic data collected across these platforms is vital to maritime operations. It ensures the precision of safety of navigation charts produced by the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) and used daily by hundreds of Department of War vessels. Hydrographic data also enables us to understand and accurately model complex oceanographic parameters, which optimizes sensor performance in the challenging marine environment.
Ultimately, the success of this mission relies on our personnel. Our hydrographers, technicians, analysts, and engineers are world-class scientists who dedicate themselves to this discipline, often spending many weeks deployed away from home each year. Their expertise and sacrifice are foundational to our maritime readiness and the safety of global navigation.
