It’s Food for Thought Friday! In a recent article written by veterinary scientist Dr. Tom Lonsdale, Yellowstone’s wolves are used as a case study to reframe how we view canine oral health. Lonsdale discusses how a wild wolf’s natural diet not only supplies essential nutrients, but may also assist in preventing chronic oral disease through massaging gums and scouring teeth.

For pet owners, the connection is obvious. A soft and processed diet removes the need to physically work for a carnivore’s food, essentially leading to long-term periodontal disease and other health risks. True overall health means considering not just what we feed our pets, including foods marketed as “natural” and “raw”, but also how their bodies interact with these foods. Without that physical interaction, we have kept the carnivore while removing what it truly means to be a carnivore. How do you support your pet’s dental health beyond standard kibble and brushing?

It’s Montana Monday, and we are SO thankful for all of your incredible support! Thanks to you, the McCleery wolves are beating the heat with brand-new, six-foot diameter splash tubs!

With record high temperatures reaching over 100 degrees for multiple weeks in a row, these water sources are crucial for helping the wolves cool off. In this video, you can see Lakota taking full advantage of his new tub with a full-body soak!

It's Conservation Saturday! Over at McCleery Ranch, wolves aren't the only carnivores making an appearance...we just found our first evidence of bears on the property this season! 🐻

While we love seeing diverse wildlife thrive on the ranch, sharing space with big carnivores comes with big responsibility. To keep both the animals and our team safe, our staff recently partnered with Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks, Defenders of Wildlife, and Montana Outdoor Legacy Foundation to install new electric fencing and update our attractant storage protocols.

It’s Throwback Thursday! London (2005-2021) was a very handsome wolf with a beautiful white coat and striking amber eyes. He was initially intended for the movie industry, but things didn’t quite work out. In 2009, London was transported to his forever home at Wolf Haven, where right from the start, he greeted many guests along the visitor route with his outgoing personality.

When London’s first companion, Kiawatha, passed away in 2014, he gained a new forever friend in female wolf, Lexi! Together, the pair was inseparable. They could always be seen nuzzling each other and romping around their enclosures, having a blast.

Today we’re throwing it back to the video of London and Lexi meeting for the first time, and remembering the beautiful impact this duo had at Wolf Haven!

It’s Tenino Tuesday! M1429 (Copal) is the opera star of the sanctuary! Many mornings during rounds, animal care staff can hear him singing his beautiful song. Sometimes, one or two wolves answer him, and other times, he even gets the whole sanctuary to join in.

It's Montana Monday! There have been quite a few recent moves here at McCleery Ranch as we continue to optimize enclosures based on age, personality, and compatible social pairings.

One of our newest groups is one we affectionately call "the Trio"—younger sister Tess and her two older brothers, Bridger and Pryor. Across the way, sibling duo Thing One and Thing Two recently moved into a neighboring double enclosure.

Since this move, the wolves have been keeping a close eye on their new neighbors, and there's been no shortage of intraspecies interaction! In this video, "the Trio" is in the foreground, where Tess can be seen confidently posturing with her tail held high. In the background, Thing One and Thing Two display an energetic bout of wrestling and zoomies in response to all the excitement.

We are delighted to see our sanctuary residents interact and enrich one another’s lives while displaying natural social behaviors!
