This school year marks 25 years of Compass High School.

Founded in Tucson in 2001 by Debbie and John Ferguson, Compass is still led by the same family today, Kerk Ferguson serves as Director, carrying forward the founding mission: an individualized, self-paced program that recognizes the uniqueness of each student in a supportive, accepting environment.

In 25 years, more than 1,400 students have earned real high school diplomas here, many after arriving significantly behind on credits, or after leaving school entirely. Compass is not a network or a charter management organization. It is a tuition-free public charter, locally governed and locally accountable, serving grades 9–12 on Tucson's east side.

Twenty-five years ago, Debbie and John Ferguson opened Compass High School with a simple promise: an individualized, self-paced program that recognizes the uniqueness of each student, in a supportive, accepting environment.

Twenty-five years later, our classrooms include the Sagrada Família.

This spring, Compass Navigators studied Gaudí's architecture in Barcelona, made chocolate at a museum workshop, hiked Montserrat, and walked the medieval walls of Carcassonne. In March, another group turned Manhattan into a living classroom — presenting artwork at the Met, reflecting at the 9/11 Memorial, and closing the week with a Broadway show.

Every Field Study is a credit-bearing academic program: preparation before the trip, immersion in the field, a reflection project for real high school credit. Not a field trip — a course taught by the world. And it costs families nothing extra, because Compass is a tuition-free public charter school, grades 9–12, on Tucson's east side.
