This morning TIFR provided EMS standby during the US Coast Guard’s chemical irritant deployment training. This gave the opportunity for USCG members to sharpen their law enforcement knowledge/skills through classroom instruction and hands on training. The training included USCG members from Station Tybee and Station Charleston.

We appreciate the privilege of assisting our partners through training efforts and/or water rescues.

Tybee Island Fire Rescue and Tybee Island Ocean Rescue training side-by-side on water rescue operations. These joint training sessions are critical to making sure our teams can seamlessly work together when seconds matter.

From shoreline operations to in-water rescues, our FD rescue swimmers and OR lifeguards bring different skills and experience together to create one strong response.

C-Shift was in the Back River yesterday training in strong currents and challenging sandbar conditions.

We train in the environments we may face during real-world emergencies, building the skills, confidence, and readiness needed to safely make rescues.

🌊 TRAINING FOR THE RESCUE YOU HOPE NEVER HAPPENS

Our firefighters recently conducted more Code X training revolutions, focusing on the search and recovery of submerged victims.

So, what is Code X? In our rescue swimmer operations, Code X is a submerged-victim response. It challenges our rescue swimmers to locate, reach, and recover a victim from beneath the surface, often with limited visibility, difficult conditions, and no guarantee of knowing exactly where the victim is.

These training evolutions allow our rescue swimmers to repeatedly practice the skills, communication, search techniques, and decision-making needed when seconds matter.

You don’t get to choose the conditions when someone needs to be rescued. That’s why we train for them. 💪🏽

Yesterday, our firefighters sharpened their forcible entry skills by training on breaching doors. This is an essential skill that allows us to gain rapid access to homes and businesses when every second matters.

No matter the emergency, our firefighters are committed to being ready when our community needs us most. Today, our Rescue Swimmers spent the morning sharpening critical water rescue skills, focusing on shoreline victim rescues and missing swimmer search protocols.

Whether we’re responding to a structure fire, a medical emergency, or a water rescue, continuous training ensures we can provide the highest level of service when seconds matter.

Tybee Island’s unique environment demands that our firefighters be prepared for a wide range of emergencies, and we’re proud to dedicate the time and effort needed to stay mission-ready on land and in the water.

🌊 Leave the Floats at Home. 🏖️

Planning a day at the beach? While inflatable floats, rafts, and inner tubes may seem like fun, they can quickly become dangerous in the ocean.

This past weekend Tybee Island Fire Rescue and Ocean Rescue responded to multiple 911 calls about drifting floats/rafts.

Even on calm days, offshore winds, tides, and currents can carry inflatables far from shore in just minutes often faster than a person can swim back. Every year, beachgoers find themselves in dangerous situations after drifting away on inflatables, putting both themselves and rescuers at risk. Unoccupied inflatables can cause an unnecessary emergency response and put a drain on resources.

For your safety:
☀️ Leave inflatable floats, rafts, and inner tubes at home.
🏊 Stay in waist-deep water if you’re not a strong swimmer.
👀 Always keep children within arm’s reach.
🏖️ Swim near a staffed lifeguard stand whenever possible.
🛟 Try and keep an unoccupied float from blowing or drifting away.
🌊 If you begin drifting away, get off the inflatable if it’s safe to do so and signal for help immediately.

A fun beach day starts with making smart choices. Help us keep everyone safe by leaving the inflatables for the pool and enjoying the ocean responsibly.
