Training is where skills are sharpened and confidence is built. Whether it’s mastering pump operations, flowing large volumes of water, or operating our aerial apparatus, our firefighters continuously train to ensure they’re ready when the community needs them most.

Congratulations to members of Tybee Island Fire Rescue on successfully completing the Pumper Apparatus Operator and Aerial Apparatus Operator courses hosted by Chatham County Fire Department. They completed these along side members of CCFD.

These classes provided valuable hands-on training and helped strengthen the skills needed to safely and effectively operate our fire apparatus. We are proud of their dedication to continuous learning and serving our community at the highest level.

Great job everyone and a special thanks to CCFD for hosting the classes.

Tybee Island Fire Rescue and Tybee Island Police Department had the opportunity to spend time with the amazing campers at Tybee's Fresh Air Home for a fun show-and-tell event!

Our firefighters demonstrated some of the tools and equipment we use on emergency calls, talked about fire safety, and gave the campers a chance to climb aboard and explore our ladder truck. Meanwhile, Tybee Police officers showcased their patrol vehicles, equipment, and even their drone.

The excitement, curiosity, and smiles from the campers made the day truly special. Seeing their reactions as they explored the apparatus, asked questions, and learned about public safety reminded us why community outreach is such an important part of what we do.

We had an incredible time visiting Tybee's Fresh Air Home and are grateful for the opportunity to share a little bit about our professions with such an enthusiastic group of kids. Thank you for having us, we're already looking forward to the next visit!

Our hearts go out to the members of our community who recently lost their home to a devastating fire. While possessions can be replaced, the emotional toll of losing a home is immeasurable. We encourage anyone who is able to consider donating to help these families as they begin the difficult journey of rebuilding their lives. Every contribution, no matter the size, can make a meaningful difference during this challenging time.

The City of Tybee Island is collecting gift cards at City Hall to assist the families displaced by the recent fire on Jones Avenue.

Community members who would like to help can donate gift cards from grocery stores, restaurants, home improvement stores, gas stations, or major retailers. All donated gift cards will be distributed directly to the Simpson and Gulbronson families as they begin the difficult process of recovery and rebuilding.

Donations may be dropped off during regular business hours at Tybee Island City Hall, 403 Butler Avenue.

The outpouring of support from our community has been incredible. Thank you to everyone who has reached out, offered assistance, and kept these families in your thoughts during this challenging time. Together, we can help our neighbors move forward. ❤️

🚨 BEACH SAFETY ALERT 🚨

The National Weather Service has issued a High Risk of Rip Currents warning for portions of the Georgia and South Carolina coastline.

Rip currents are powerful channels of water that can quickly pull even the strongest swimmers away from shore. If you plan on visiting the beach, use extreme caution and always swim near a lifeguard whenever possible.

🌊 Rip Current Safety Tips:

✔️ Swim in front of a lifeguard.
✔️ Never swim alone.
✔️ Stay aware of changing surf conditions.
✔️ If caught in a rip current, remain calm. Do not swim directly back to shore against the current. Instead, swim parallel to the shoreline until you are free of the current, then angle back toward shore.
✔️ If you see someone in trouble, call 911 and alert a lifeguard. Do not enter the water unless you are trained and equipped for a rescue.

Tybee Island Fire Rescue and lifeguards, will continue to monitor conditions closely. We encourage all beach visitors to respect warning flags, follow lifeguard instructions, and make safety your top priority.

A day at the beach should be fun. Don’t let a rip current turn it into an emergency.

🚨🐦 Joint Rescue Operation Successful! 🐦🚨

Last night, Tybee Island Fire Rescue and the Tybee Island Police Department teamed up for what may be the most important rescue mission of the week… returning a baby green heron safely back to its nest!

After keeping a watchful eye on the young bird throughout the evening, our friends at Tybee PD called in the fire department for some aerial assistance. Officers helped stabilize the ladder, provided lighting, and guided firefighters during the operation while the tiny feathered patient calmly waited.

Thanks to a true multi-agency effort, the baby heron was successfully reunited with its family.

This rescue proves that no matter how big or small the emergency, Tybee’s first responders are always ready to answer the call. 🚒🚓🐦

Training never stops at Tybee Island Fire Rescue.

This week crews focused on pump operations and master stream training, sharpening the skills needed to move large volumes of water quickly and efficiently during major fire incidents. Our firefighters trained on utilizing a single apparatus to not only make an aggressive fire attack, but also protect nearby exposures at the same time.

In many fires, especially in tightly spaced areas, protecting neighboring structures can be just as important as extinguishing the main fire building. By maximizing the capabilities of one apparatus and coordinating pump operations effectively, our crews can increase efficiency, conserve resources, and improve overall incident operations.

Our crews are continuing to ramp up water rescue training to ensure we are ready for the influx of beach goers this summer.

Water rescue operations are a year-round responsibility for Tybee Island Fire Rescue, but during the summer months our personnel respond to a significant increase in water-related emergencies. Our fire department rescue swimmers train extensively to handle everything from distressed swimmers and rip current rescues to large-scale incidents in challenging surf conditions.

While our Lifeguards remain the primary response for beach emergencies, Tybee Island Fire Rescue provides critical backup on all water rescues and major incidents utilizing our Rescue Watercraft and/or Rescue Swimmers when needed.

These skills require constant practice, teamwork, and preparation to operate safely and effectively in dynamic ocean conditions. We are proud of the dedication our personnel continue to show in protecting both our residents and visitors throughout the beach season.

- Swim near a lifeguard
- Always respect warning flags and surf conditions
- Never underestimate rip currents
- Call 911 immediately for emergencies
