Prepare Today: Fall 2026 CERT Academy

The City of Vallejo is accepting applications for its Fall 2026 Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Academy, providing Vallejo residents and workers with valuable training to prepare for emergencies and disasters.

The Vallejo CERT program teaches participants basic disaster response skills, including fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Through classroom and hands-on training, CERT members learn how they can assist their families, neighbors, and workplaces following a major emergency when professional emergency responders may be overwhelmed or temporarily unavailable.

To participate, applicants must be at least 17 years old, live or work within the City of Vallejo, and meet the program’s eligibility requirements. The Fall 2026 training series will be held at the Solano Community College Vallejo Campus, with a final hands-on training session at the Vallejo Fire Department Fire Training Center.

Ready to get involved? The CERT application can be found at the bottom of the City’s CERT webpage. Completed applications may be brought to the City Manager’s Office on the third floor of City Hall, 555 Santa Clara Street, Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., or submitted by email.

This morning, the Vallejo Fire and Police Departments came together with members of our community to commemorate the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001.

We gathered to honor the lives lost, remember the bravery and sacrifice of those who responded, and recognize the countless families and communities whose lives were forever changed that day.
We remember. We honor. We will never forget.

🇺🇸 September 11, 2026 — 25 Years Later

Today, the Vallejo Fire Department joins communities across our nation in remembering the lives lost on September 11, 2001.

Twenty-five years later, we continue to honor the 2,977 people who never returned home, including the firefighters, police officers, and other first responders who made the ultimate sacrifice while answering the call to serve others.

This morning, members of the Vallejo Fire Department will participate in a memorial ceremony to pause, remember, and pay our respects to those who were lost and to the families, colleagues, and communities forever changed that day.

A day to remember.
A time to honor.
A moment for unity.

Early yesterday morning (9/8/26), the Vallejo Fire Department responded to a vehicle into the Mare Island Strait. Upon arrival, firefighters were able to determine that the solo occupant had self-extricated.
The Fire Department’s boat team was called back out later to assist a tow company with the complicated removal of the vehicle from the waterway.

Vallejo Fire Captain Whitney completed HT PER-261: Hazardous Materials Technologies—Sampling, Monitoring & Detection at the Center for Domestic Preparedness in Anniston, AL.

Vallejo Engine 327 has been deployed as part of multi-county strike team 2140C to the Little Fire, currently burning near Sunol, CA.

The Fire currently sits at just over 1,000 acres and is 40% contained. Four Vallejo firefighters departed earlier today on E327 to assist with fire containment efforts.

🏆 Congratulations to our 2026 Vallejo Fire Department Officer of the Year, Captain Brandon Whitney! 🚒

Captain Whitney has served the Vallejo Fire Department for 12 years, including the past 3 years as Captain, and exemplifies leadership, professionalism, and service.

A respected mentor and instructor, he is a subject matter expert in PPE, HazMat, ICS, Property Conservation, and Community Risk Education. He also serves on our HazMat Team, Water Rescue Team, Tactical EMS, Honor Guard, PPE Committee, and county EMS committees.

Throughout his career, Captain Whitney has helped develop Vallejo’s Helicopter Rescue Program, launched Solano County’s HazMat Drone Program, organized the county’s largest multi-agency emergency drill, improved EMS protocols, and secured funding for critical firefighter safety equipment.

Known for his humility, kindness, and dedication to both his crew and our community, Captain Whitney leads by example every day. His commitment to training even helped equip a City employee with the CPR skills that later saved their own child’s life.

Captain Whitney’s service, innovation, and commitment to others embody the very best of the Vallejo Fire Department.
