Senior Commonwealth's Attorney Nickie Herron received the Distinguished Assistant of the Year – Large Office award from the Virginia Association of Commonwealth's Attorneys at their statewide conference this week.

Nickie has 16 years of service as a prosecutor in the Virginia Beach Commonwealth's Attorney's Office. She handles many serious cases and has set herself apart as an expert in Human Trafficking. Nickie serves on the Hampton Roads Human Trafficking Taskforce, the Virginia Beach Human Trafficking Task Force, and the Virginia Beach Juvenile Human Trafficking Task Force. Nickie trains law enforcement, fellow prosecutors in the office, and prosecutors from other offices throughout the state. Nickie’s dedication and exceptional prosecutorial skills make a difference in the lives of victims and our community. Congratulations, Nickie!

🚨 PARENT WARNING — PUBLIC SAFETY ALERT Virginia Beach Police Department

"Benadryl Challenge" Know the Danger

The Virginia Beach Police Department is urging parents and guardians to be aware of a dangerous social media trend known as the "Benadryl Challenge," primarily found on platforms like TikTok.

This challenge encourages young people to take dangerous amounts of the over-the-counter drug diphenhydramine (DPH), the active ingredient found in Benadryl and similar OTC medications in an attempt to induce hallucinations.

Participants are urged to take up to 12 tablets at once. For perspective, the maximum recommended dose in a 24-hour period is:

Ages 6 to under 12: 6 tablets maximum Ages 12 and older / Adults: 12 tablets maximum

Taking more than the recommended amount can lead to:
• Nausea
• Seizures
• Death

Below are symptoms of a diphenhydramine overdose in different parts of the body.

BLADDER AND KIDNEYS

• Inability to urinate

EYES, EARS, NOSE, MOUTH, AND THROAT

• Blurred vision
• Dry mouth
• Enlarged pupils
• Very dry eyes
• Ringing in the ears

HEART AND BLOOD VESSELS

• Low blood pressure
• Rapid heartbeat

NERVOUS SYSTEM

• Agitation
• Confusion
• Seizures
• Delirium
• Depression
• Drowsiness
• Hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that aren't there)
• Increased sleepiness
• Nervousness
• Tremor
• Unsteadiness

SKIN
• Dry, red skin

STOMACH AND INTESTINES

• Nausea
• Vomiting

If you come across an individual experiencing these symptoms, take appropriate action and call 911 to request emergency rescue immediately.
