We presented Connie Oxley with an award for her service to Warr Acres for 50 years of service last night. What an amazing accomplishment! She is the court clerk. We graduated together from Putman City high school as well.

This applies to Warr Acres voters as well. Please get out and vote!

The Oklahoma City metro has 37% of the state’s population and over 42% of the state’s GDP. We have to be heard when major decisions are made about the future of our state.

One week from today, on Tuesday, August 25th, our state will hold a runoff election to choose the Republican nominee for Governor. Other critical choices will also be made by Democrats and Independents. There are runoffs for both major parties and there are state questions on the ballot, which means that ALL registered voters can vote next Tuesday.

I fully recognize that closed partisan primaries depress interest in these crucial elections, and they push the candidates to focus on low-priority issues and to take extreme positions held by only a small percentage of Oklahomans. I fully recognize these gubernatorial campaigns have been uninspiring and their advertisements depressing. These campaigns have not lived up to who we are as Oklahomans and they have certainly not engaged in political discourse the way we do it in OKC. As a result, never in my adult life has there been less conversation about an open Governor’s race. Having said that, the choice of who will be our Governor still matters, and the election runoff for the dominant party is where the most critical choice is often made. That decision arrives next Tuesday, and Oklahoma City has to be heard in that decision. We are driving this state’s economy and culture. Our voices have to be heard as our state chooses its next Governor.

As your Mayor, I am asking you to vote next Tuesday. Please put it on your calendar to do so. And if you have any platform at all - whether it’s as a leader, an employer, a business owner, or just someone with a social media account - I’m asking you amplify this message that we must get out and vote.

Polls will be open from 7 am to 7 pm Tuesday, August 25th at your usual voting location. Also, early voting will be available at your county election board on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Let’s VOTE, OKC!

We should be getting the extra poly carts that we ordered in about three weeks. The Mayor, Public Works Director, City clerk, Billing clerk, and City attorney along with the city council are reviewing the terms for the ordinance regarding big trash pick-up and hope to have a solution by the August city council meeting. As I have told several citizens, after switching to carts, we were trying a trial big trash pick up of twice a year, but because of storm debris that has not been an effective solution. Part of the reason that we went to that is because of a shortage of CDL drivers who could drive the grappling trucks. It requires a class A driver to drive the manual grappling truck. We purchased a new automatic grappling truck this year so that all of the CDL class B drivers can drive them. We only have one class a CDL driver who can drive the manual grappling truck. We are still trying to find more CDL drivers. It has been difficult to hire people at the low salaries that we pay. Even though we raised the starting salary for CDL drivers, we are still below the average. The new side loader can only pick up about half of each ward on that ward’s designated day, so we are still using the tipper truck to pick up the other half and pick up streets that are too narrow to get the side loader down, and pick-ups for those who are handicapped. In those cases, we have a driver and two laborers to help attach the carts to the back of the truck. The side loader only has a driver. The other problem that we have is that our pay is so low for laborers in public works. I am working on that along with the public works director. Hopefully, we will come up with a solution for that as well! I just wanted to let everyone know that we are working behind the scenes on this problem. It just takes time! The city has ordered more polycarts due to more people needing them. Please be patient while we wait on them.

Recycling will occur tomorrow from 8:30 to 11:30 at 5301 N. Hammond. Please clean any cans or containers. We take 1, 2, and 5 plastics, cans, and cardboard.

Please be mindful of the even odd watering system because we get our water from OKC. If you house number is even, you can water on days of the week that are even. If you house number is odd, you can water on days of the week that are odd.

What an honor to be included at this momentous Big Red Boot revealing by the Eagle family! The designer was Cam Eagle, a lifelong friend of mine. This is at the cowboy Hall of Fame and everyone should go by and see it! Warr Acres will be getting our second Route 66 sign very soon that will be placed at 39th and Ann Arbor! Our first sign is at 39th and Hammond and we share it with Bethany.
