"An incident of my youth."

Anna Willess Williams was not a public figure by choice, yet her influence became iconic. As a young teacher, she posed for coin sculptor George T. Morgan, embodying a portrait style influenced by classical traditions of the American Renaissance. The Morgan dollar reflected the late 19th century’s artistic shift toward realism and classical refinement. Liberty was no longer distant or symbolic; she was approachable and American. That design became one of the most celebrated in U.S. coinage, but Anna sought to keep her identity a secret. Years later when asked about her modeling for the coin, she simply referred to the experience as “an incident of my youth”, according to a 1926 Time Magazine article.
