Dear LIFTers,

With the holidays upon us, we go into the season of gratitude and reflection. Given recent events, for me that reflection has to include a recognition that our country continues to grapple with the impact of systems built on a foundation of racial inequity.

In the past few days, I have heard often “I am not surprised, but I am…disappointed, depressed, infuriated, (fill in the blank).” To not be surprised at inequity put in such stark relief again and again is a statement on internalized trauma and despondency felt on an ancestral level. How, then, can we be fully grateful when hopes for justice are inevitably dashed?

As our Executive Director in New York, Xiomara Romain offers, “It is our collective charge to push for a world that is equitable and kind; where people do not have to fear for their lives because of the color of their skin; and where everyone has the same opportunities to thrive.”

I am grateful for the wisdom of my colleagues during times like this. I am honored to work alongside the LIFT team, the parents we partner with, board members, coaches, donors, and with our programmatic partners—a beautifully diverse ecosystem fighting for all to have the same opportunity to succeed (and to fail) with equal chance to be seen for their humanity and potential.

Working with and supporting LIFT highlights the good in the world. I have been blown away by the success LIFT and its members have achieved in the last year and the HOPE that engenders is remarkable. The work we are doing together to put race equity at the center of all we do sheds light and that is more than worthy of a moment of gratitude.

Thank you for being a part of the effort to fight the despair with hope, and the pain of injustice with loving accountability.

I am grateful for you.

Our Story

Founded nearly 20 years ago and headquartered in Washington D.C. with offices in Chicago, Los Angeles and New York, LIFT is a national nonprofit dedicated to empowering families to break the cycle of intergenerational poverty.

Our goal – connecting families to the resources and networks they need to achieve economic mobility.

LIFT coaches build trusted relationships with low-income parents and caregivers of young children. We help them with immediate needs such as child care and transportation, and long-term goals, such as better paying jobs or continuing education. Not to mention all the things in between, like opening bank accounts, establishing credit and building strong social networks.

Two decades ago, we opened our doors to families in need and what we knew then still holds true now: low-income parents and caregivers want what all parents do – to make a better life for themselves and their children.

I'd like to share a rather unusual and free aces prevention resource...parenting tips bumper stickers! Advancing Parenting, a Camarillo, CA nonprofit, produces parenting tips bumper stickers and makes them available at no cost to schools, businesses, organizations, clinics, and individuals. There are fifty-one in a set and each bumper sticker communicates a parenting behavior or practice generally recognized as supporting the healthy development of children. Just one will be read thousands of times! Bumper stickers are a unique and powerful way to educate everyone about parenting and prevent child abuse five, ten, twenty, fifty years down the road. At stoplights drivers and passengers point, smile, and nod. Conversations begin and often a phone is used to take a photo of the sticker right at the stoplight. Presumably, they are being shared on social media. It's wonderful to see! Sets of the stickers can be put in holders and placed on counters and tables so folks can select one or more for their cars. Visit www.advancingparenting.org to request this free resource. Use a computer...our website is not optimized for phones. Please share.

With the holidays right around the corner, we’re reminded of those less fortunate than ourselves. Today, #HumanRightsDay, brings that even closer to home. With every Outside Table purchase, we give to two very special organizations, LIFT and Determined to Succeed both of which support families in breaking the intergenerational cycle of poverty. We’d love if you gave them a like, and maybe some love too. From our hearts to yours, thank you. #outsidetable
