As the day comes to a close, we’re making one last ask to our North Texas community: help Generation Hope continue providing student parents in Dallas–Fort Worth with the resources they need to pursue their degrees and achieve greater economic mobility for their families.

In our first year in DFW, 100% of participating Scholars have remained enrolled in the program, and 70% maintained at least a 2.5 GPA last semester. We are currently serving 23 families across the region, with 3 out of 4 Scholars being first-generation college students.

These milestones reflect what can happen when student parents have access to meaningful, consistent support.

Today, we’re asking North Texas to invest in student parents.

Generation Hope launched our Dallas–Fort Worth Scholar Program in 2025 — rooted in community voice, equity and the evidence behind two-generation approaches. In our first year, we partnered with 9 local colleges and several community organizations while providing Scholars with tuition assistance, mentoring, mental health resources and career training.

The results are encouraging: 100% of participating Scholars have remained enrolled in the program, and 70% maintained at least a 2.5 GPA last semester. We are currently serving 23 families across the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area, and 3 out of 4 Scholars are first-generation college students.

As Aniyah Johnson, one of our Scholars, shared: “Generation Hope has provided resources and experiences that support me not only as a student pursuing my degree or a mother but overall personal development.”

What does it look like for higher education institutions to meaningfully support these students while advancing enrollment, retention, and completion goals?

Next week, Generation Hope’s Director of Learning & Innovation, Dr. Tia Dolet, will join Inceptia and Bossier Parish Community College for “The Student Parent Opportunity: Strategies to Strengthen Enrollment, Retention and Completion.”

The conversation will explore research and trends related to student parents, institutional strategies, and programs, services, and policies that can improve persistence and completion.

As Tia shares in this video, supporting student parents isn’t simply another initiative to add to the list. It’s part of making sure higher education works for the students it was created to serve.

Student parents are earning degrees while raising children, leading campus organizations, advocating for their communities, and contributing to campus life. The question is whether higher education will recognize and support them in that work.

FamilyU Fellows like Maria Lopez are helping lead that change. As a mother of four, 4.0 student, student parent advocate, and the Child Development Club president at El Camino, Maria brings both lived experience and leadership to the movement for more family-inclusive higher education.

Her message is clear: people matter. Listening, advocacy, and belonging can shape whether student parents feel seen and supported as they pursue their degrees.

This Student Parent Month, we're continuing our work toward a future where parenting students don't have to move mountains just to walk the stage.

Ariel Ventura-Lazo spent nine years balancing college, fatherhood, work, and providing for his family.

For much of that journey, he believed he had to carry the pressure quietly. As a Generation Hope Scholar, he found something different: a community that recognized him not only as a student, but as a father.

Today, Ariel supports student parents as Generation Hope’s D.C. Scholar Program Coordinator.

His story is a reminder that identifying someone as a “student parent” is only the starting point. Meaningful support requires understanding the person, their circumstances, and what they need to succeed.

What does it actually mean to be a student parent ally?

Supporting student parents starts with understanding their experiences and taking meaningful action on campus. Here are three ways you can put allyship into practice:

1. Track student parent attendance at your institution – Collecting and using student parent data can help institutions better understand who they serve and identify opportunities to strengthen support.

2. Create an inclusive environment – Consider how campus culture, programs, and practices account for the realities of students who are also parents.

3. Advocate for student parent-centered policy – Support policies that recognize the needs of student parents and make higher education more accessible for parenting students and their families.
