❤️ Sunday, August 30 is National Faith HIV/AIDS Awareness Day.

NFHAAD is a day to engage faith communities to work together for HIV/AIDS education, prevention, treatment, care, and support, and to reduce and eliminate stigma and discrimination.

Faith communities are encouraged to learn about the status of HIV funding in their state, nationally, and internationally, and to take action to sustain and increase HIV prevention, treatment, and care services for all who require them.

Many of the HIV housing programs still serving people today began in faith communities, in church basements and volunteer-run care homes during the earliest years of the epidemic. That work continues.

Faith communities are fighting for freedom and fairness together each year until there is a cure.

This week is National Community Health Worker Awareness Week!

Community health workers are the people who show up: connecting neighbors to testing, to treatment, to benefits, and to housing. In a CDC and NACHW survey, 68% said they address housing as a social determinant of health, and many work directly with people living with HIV.

That's the work we do too! Stable housing is what makes consistent HIV care possible, and CHWs are often the ones who make that connection real for someone who is unhoused or housing-unstable.

Did you know?

Only 31% of Gen Z adults say they feel knowledgeable about HIV. For Gen X, it's 60%.

That's from GLAAD's 2026 State of HIV Stigma Report, and it points to something worth paying attention to. The generation that came of age after HIV became preventable and treatable is the one that knows the least about it.

The report links this to what it calls an "invisibility paradox." 72% of Americans haven't seen a single story about a person living with HIV in the past year, up from 66% in 2024. Only one LGBTQ character living with HIV appeared on television last season, and that character isn't returning. Out of 225 major studio films analyzed, one featured a character living with HIV, set in the early days of the epidemic. When real stories disappear, outdated assumptions fill the gap.

Why this matters for housing: young people are among those most at risk of housing instability, and knowledge gaps compound that risk. Not knowing about testing, prevention, or U=U means later diagnoses and delayed care. For a young person who is also unstably housed, those delays are harder to recover from.

Housing is healthcare. So is knowing the facts.

Our Executive Director, Lauren Banks, spoke with The Advocate about a new requirement pulling HOPWA into the federal immigration verification system.

Recent grant agreements direct grantees to verify clients' immigration status through DHS's SAVE system. Some HUD officials have told those same grantees to wait. Providers are getting two different answers, and people who need housing are caught in the middle.

"We have a duty to help and to serve and to make things as easy as possible," Lauren told The Advocate. "And instead, this is just one more admin piece that is rooted in fear."

HOPWA is the only federal program dedicated to housing for low-income people with HIV. Housing should be as low-barrier as possible.

Today is Southern HIV/AIDS Awareness Day.

The South is home to 38% of the U.S. population but accounts for 52% of new HIV diagnoses. That gap isn't about individual choices. It's about access.

Housing instability, poverty, lack of insurance coverage, and systemic racism all drive the South's disproportionate HIV burden. You cannot stay in care without a stable place to live.

Founded by the Southern AIDS Coalition, SHAAD is a call to close those gaps with testing, prevention, treatment, and the housing that makes all of it possible.

Housing is healthcare. In the South, that's not a slogan. It's the unmet need.

On August 18, 1990, Congress enacted the Ryan White CARE Act.

Thirty-six years later, it supports more than 600,000 people with HIV across the country, providing medical care, medication, and the support services that make staying in care possible.

That includes housing. Ryan White funds can support emergency and transitional housing assistance, housing referral and placement, and housing advocacy for clients, alongside coordination with permanent supportive housing.

NHAHC is grateful for this program and for the advances that have expanded housing options for people living with HIV. Stable housing is what makes consistent care possible.

A CDC Community Guide review of 26 studies compared Housing First with Treatment First, the older model requiring people to be "housing ready" before they can access permanent housing.

For clients living with HIV, Housing First reduced:
▪️ Mortality by 37%
▪️ Emergency department use by 41%
▪️ Hospitalization by 36%
▪️ Viral load by 22%
▪️ Depression by 13%
▪️ Homelessness by 37%

Stable housing isn't a reward for getting well. It's what makes getting well possible.

👏 Worth celebrating.

Clare Housing has unveiled a $7 million renovation of Clare Northeast Apartments in Minneapolis, modernizing all 32 apartments and updating common spaces, while preserving one of Minnesota's longest-standing supportive housing communities for people living with HIV.

The organization is approaching 40 years of service. It began as volunteer-run care homes during the AIDS epidemic of the 1980s and now serves roughly 500 residents a year.

The results speak for themselves: about 89% of Clare Housing residents maintain viral suppression, and more than 90% stay connected to medical care.
