September 9 is National African Immigrant and Refugee HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis Awareness Day (NAIRHHA Day). Founded by advocates in Massachusetts, Washington, D.C., and New York, NAIRHHA Day has been observed annually on September 9 by communities, advocates, healthcare professionals, government officials, and other stakeholders since 2014. The purpose of NAIRHHA Day is to bring national and local attention to the HIV and viral hepatitis needs of African immigrants living in the U.S. in a culturally and linguistically appropriate manner.
Congratulations DeKeitra on your recent accomplishments as a PhD student! We are so proud of your achievements! So grateful to have you a part of NHAHC’s LLC! 🎉🎊
• We are thrilled to celebrate two recent accomplishments of PhD student DeKeitra Griffin!
DeKeitra has recently been awarded a prestigious scholarship for the 2024 Healing-Centered and Anti-Oppressive Leadership: Cultivating the Next Generation of Emerging HIV Leaders training in Houston, funded by the SUSTAIN Wellbeing COMPASS Coordinating Center. This intensive training is designed to cultivate the next generation of HIV leaders, and DeKeitra was selected as one of only 15 recipients from across 12 southern states! đź‘Ź
But that’s not all—DeKeitra was also accepted into the International Partnership for Q***r Youth Resilience’s (INQYR’s) International Student Training Network (ISTN), sponsored by the Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work at the University of Toronto. Over the next two years, he will be participating in a range of activities aimed at fostering resilience and research with Sexual and Gender Diverse Youth. 🌍✨

Today is Southern HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (SHAAD)! ❤️
Originally founded by the Southern AIDS Coalition, this day calls attention to the disproportionate number of people living with HIV in the South.
This year’s theme, “Power to the People!”, is meant to be a reminder of the immense power in one’s voice, one’s history, one’s joy, one’s dollar, and one’s vote. Together, we can make a lasting impact!
In Washington, D.C. for the Ryan White Conference? NHAHC will be sharing out each day's sessions that focus on housing. There are many! See you there!
Please check out more data in the most recent 2022 MMP surveillance report.
This report contains data on:
- Barriers to care, viral suppression, and good quality of life (e.g., social determinants of health and unmet needs for ancillary services)
- Care engagement and clinical outcomes (e.g., missed HIV care visits, sustained viral suppression, sexually transmitted infection testing), and
- HIV prevention strategies (e.g., use of pre-exposure prophylaxis among sexual partners)

"Being homeless and trying to figure out where to stay was a constant experience. I’d have a guy offer me a week’s stability in a room, but then he’d lock me in there and keep me for sexual services. He’d bring me food—that’s more money I’d owe him. You just become more and more indebted." — ROXANNE, INDIGENOUS SURVIVOR AND ADVOCATE www.thelifestory.org
