Mary House

It began with one house and one family. Today Mary House provides transitional housing, food, and support to immigrant and refugee families in DC & MD.

The measure we care about is not how long a family stays - but how ready they are when they leave. Based in Northeast Washington D.C., we work predominantly with families displaced by war and extreme poverty, including the low-income Latin American population. While we began in 1981 as a way to address the housing needs of one family, Mary House has grown into an established support program within

the community. Our work aims to further the potential for success that is already present in all of our residents.

🎓 Graduation season is here and our youth are SHINING!

This year, the Mary House family celebrated SIX graduates (not all featured) - 3 high school, 1 middle school, and 2 elementary school milestones worth cheering about, plus one of our very own volunteers crossing the stage too. Every single one of them put in the work, and we had the honor of cheering them on.

From one-on-one tutoring to IEP advocacy to navigating school applications, our Youth Empowerment Program walks alongside families every step of the way. These graduates are proof of what happens when a whole community shows up.

This is what showing up looks like. 🐾❤️

St. Anthony of Padua School brought the energy this week with a walkathon benefiting Mary House — and we are still smiling about it. Students made signs, walked together through the neighborhood, and raised funds to support immigrant and refugee families right here in Brookland. Even the pups got in on the action.

A walkathon is a powerful tool a school can offer young people. It is not just fundraising. It is teaching kids that they have a voice, that their community needs them, and that showing up in person matters.

Before this building had walls, it had a vision. And a handful of people who refused to let it stay a dream.

That patch of dirt in the first photo? It is now Regina Maria Apartments, a home for immigrant and refugee families right here in Brookland.

Pictured here are just a few of the team who made it happen: Bill (co-founder and Executive Director), his son Mike, Juan (who came to Mary House as a participant and now oversees all 13 of our properties), and board members Jay and Loring.

Together with a dedicated crew of about 8, they believed every family deserves a safe place to land, grow, and belong.

No big construction company. No fancy timeline. Just heart.

The second photo is what that belief looks like finished.

Friday Night Craft Club with Mrs. Katie is in session!

Tonight's agenda: custom yoga mats. 🧘‍♀️We are getting creative and hands-on as we prepare for something really special this summer. Mary House will be hosting our first intergenerational yoga, a gathering for our grandmas, moms, and daughters all together.

Because wellness, joy, and community look even better when the whole family shows up. 💚

First outdoor mural: complete. I was humbled every single step of the way.

What looks effortless on a wall is anything but. To every artist who has created a mural for their community to enjoy — I see you, I respect you, and I am in complete awe of what you do. Your work transforms spaces and lifts spirits in ways that words can't quite reach.

This mural's theme? Where flowers bloom, so does hope. 🌻 And that feels very right for the work we do at Mary House, where 13 properties are home to families rebuilding their lives.
