Mary House

Mary House It began with one house and one family. Today Mary House provides transitional housing, food, and support to immigrant and refugee families in DC & MD.

The measure we care about is not how long a family stays - but how ready they are when they leave. Based in Northeast Washington D.C., we work predominantly with families displaced by war and extreme poverty, including the low-income Latin American population. While we began in 1981 as a way to address the housing needs of one family, Mary House has grown into an established support program within the community. Our work aims to further the potential for success that is already present in all of our residents.

🎉 Thank you to Leadership Initiatives and Georgetown University's AI & Business Strategy Internship program!

This summer, a team of talented students partnered with Mary House to build tools that will strengthen our grant management and donor engagement, work that directly supports our mission.

It was a great experience getting to know these students, and we're excited to put what they created to work for our community.

Meet Katie. Daughter of Mary House co-founders Bill and Sharon, Katie stopped by our summer program to read her book, Mickey, to the kids and inspire them to write their own stories. The children had fun creating their own short stories to share, discovering their own voice along the way.

Our Youth Education and Empowerment Program is completely free for every family we serve. Built on people who show up and share what they know.

Our first ever Mary House Summer Bazaar was a success.

Families came in, picked up a basket, and shopped completely free. Clothes, shoes, toys, household essentials. All donated by this community. All theirs to take home.

Our Fall Bazaar is already in the works. We are not collecting donations right now but will be opening up soon. If you want to be contacted when we do, reach out to Megan at [email protected].

Full circle moment. 💙

This is Mareanne — the daughter of Ansam and Samer, an Iraqi family Mary House welcomed in 2008 through The List Project to Resettle Iraqi Allies, an organization that helped Iraqis who had risked their lives working alongside the U.S. government find safe refuge in America.

Mareanne grew up in our afterschool program and summer camp. This summer, she came back — not as a camper, but as a volunteer, ready to give our kids the same joy and sense of home she remembers finding at Mary House.

This is what Mary House is really about — not a program you age out of, but a community you carry with you and come back to. Thank you, Mareanne, for coming home. 🏡

Daughters, mothers, and abuelas from our community rolled out mats together for Mary House's first intergenerational yoga class. The class was led entirely in Spanish by Erica Baca, who introduced our families to the chakras and to yoga poses built to help us actually feel each one.

Erica taught more than poses — she gave our women an hour to slow down, connect with themselves, connect with each other, and take home a few simple ways to honor their spirits daily.

This is what care looks like at Mary House beyond housing and food: rest, breath, and belonging for the families we walk alongside. 💙

Thank you to the incredible staff at Turkey Thicket Recreation Center for welcoming our Mary House Summer Camp kids for a pool day. Our campers had an amazing time cooling off and splashing around. ☀️🏊🏽‍♀️

Today at summer camp, we made some beautiful music together. 🎶

One of our Mary House fathers, Rafael, joined us for a very special Music Day. Before he arrived, the kids got busy making their own tambourines so they would be ready to play along. Rafael is a multi-instrumentalist whose true passion is the cello, and together they all performed Despacito. The energy in the room was something else.

Music is such a powerful bridge between cultures, generations, and hearts. It is one of those gifts that brings people together in ways words sometimes cannot.

Meet Juan, Mary House resident and Facility Manager, with his family. His son Abdi recently graduated from the University of North Carolina Greensboro and is building a career in banking.

🌞 Summer camp is officially underway at Mary House!

Bubble blowing, water bottle decorating, snacks, and a whole lot of energy. We've got two weeks of free programming ahead for the kids and families - and if today is any indication, it's going to be a great one. 💛
