In August 1970, Samuel Williams, president of the Black Organization of Students (BOSA-CUA), and other students organized two sit-ins at the University President's office (which was then in Mullen Library) to advocate for the creation of a Black Studies program at CU. Four students were brought up on disciplinary charges related to the sit-ins (Williams is pictured above at the first disciplinary hearing). They were all later cleared. Williams was tragically killed in a car accident months after the sit-ins. Today the University honors his memory with the Sam Williams Memorial Award, which is given to an undergraduate who has "contributed significantly to the activities of minority or international students, enhanced communication, and furthered understanding among culturally and ethnically diverse groups on campus and in the community."

You can find out more about Williams at The University Archives and find resources on African American history using the Mullen Library's searchbox or in the Stacks under call numbers E184.5-185.89 (non-fiction), and PS (fiction).
