The Rotary Club of Weirton enjoyed hearing from Lola Atkinson, Victim Advocate counselor for The Lighthouse part of Change Inc,Hancock and Brooke Cty. Lola told us that they served 250 people last year and 40 who used the shelter. 87% of the people who ask for help with Domestic Violence are female. They will help anyone that has issues with domestic violence and abuse. Domestic violence is the leading cause of serious injury to women, more than rapes and mugging and car accidents combined. The Rotary club of Weirton had The Weir High school cheerleaders. They were discussing their fundraiser. $25 for a let’s go riders yard sign. The money goes to the cheer boosters. They use this money for the girls. They feed them, buy uniforms/ replacements for worn items. They wanted to do the yard signs this year to bring back Weir School Spirit to the community and show our support for the kids. The Rotary Club of Weirton heard from Chris Krishak who is in charge of the Marland Hgts 5K Classic on August 14. Pre registration special ends August 13. And you can sign up at runsignup.com or WMCC FRONT DESK. Our main speaker was Mary Oddi who is in charge of the Cub Scout group with special needs in Burgettstown pa. She is looking for a WV sponsor for her group and has asked the Weirton Rotary to help her with this group. The Weirton Rotary Club enjoyed hearing from Nathan Kurty, President of the Hancock Brooke Young Professionals. The group started 4 years ago and has 32 members. The group was started to get to know the young people in the area and learn to lead thru professional networking, community involvement and personal development. They are sponsoring the Weirton Food Truck Festival August 22, 12-7 pm. Wonderful group. Went to the soft opening of the New Marland Hgts Park Pickelball courts. It was wonderful to see so many people enjoying the new courts. And they were all very thankful to the Weirton Rotary for the major sponsorship.

Weirton Rotary club welcomed the Father and son duo, Bob and Travis Bolner, are getting ready to open Hosel Rockets Golf Center in Weirton, bringing a home-grown golf simulator and pro-shop operation to the Upper Ohio Valley.

“We got tired of seeing big box stores take advantage of their customers and not solve any of their problems,” explained Travis Bolner during Wednesday's meeting of the Weirton Rotary Club.
