Ohio County, WV – The turning lane at intersection of 16th Street and Chapline Street, in Wheeling, will be closed, from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., on Thursday, September 10, 2026, for electric work. Flaggers will maintain traffic. Motorists are advised to slow down and expect delays.

⚠️ WEATHER UPDATE — SEVERE STORMS & DANGEROUS HEAT TODAY ⚠️

The National Weather Service Pittsburgh has updated the forecast for Thursday, September 3. Wheeling and Ohio County remain in a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) for severe thunderstorms today.

⛈️ SEVERE WEATHER — MAINLY 4 PM TO MIDNIGHT

Thunderstorms are expected to develop later today, with the primary threats being damaging winds and large hail. The NWS also indicates that a tornado or two is possible across the region.

For the Wheeling/Ohio County area:

💨 Damaging winds are the primary concern. Wheeling is within the 15–29% probability area for severe wind gusts of at least 58 mph within 25 miles.
🧊 Large hail is possible. Wheeling is within the 5–14% probability area for hail 1 inch in diameter or larger within 25 miles.
🌪️ Tornado threat: Wheeling is near the southern edge of the 2–4% tornado probability area. While the tornado threat is lower than the damaging-wind threat, it is not zero.
🌧️ Heavy downpours may accompany thunderstorms and could produce reduced visibility and localized flooding.

🌡️ HEAT ADVISORY THROUGH 8 PM

Before the storms arrive, another hot and humid day is expected. The NWS forecasts high temperatures of 90–95°F with heat index values around 100°F. A Heat Advisory remains in effect for much of northern West Virginia, eastern Ohio and southwestern Pennsylvania through 8 PM today.

⚠️ TIMING IS IMPORTANT: The primary severe-weather window is expected to be 4 PM through midnight, meaning storms could affect the area during the evening commute and evening activities.

📅 FRIDAY: Another round of thunderstorms is possible from late morning through early evening. Wheeling and much of the area southwest of I-76 are currently under a Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 5). Damaging winds, large hail and heavy downpours will again be possible, but confidence in severe storms is lower than today.

📱 BE WEATHER READY: Keep phones charged, have multiple ways to receive warnings, and know where you will shelter before storms arrive. If a Severe Thunderstorm or Tornado Warning is issued for your location, move indoors immediately and stay away from windows.

⚠️ WEATHER ALERT — HEAT ADVISORY & SEVERE STORMS POSSIBLE TODAY ⚠️

The National Weather Service Pittsburgh has issued an updated severe weather briefing for Wednesday, September 2. For Wheeling and Ohio County, WV, the main concerns today are dangerous heat followed by the potential for strong to severe thunderstorms later this afternoon and evening.

🌡️ HEAT ADVISORY TODAY — 8 AM TO 8 PM
Hot and humid conditions are expected, with temperatures across the region reaching 90–95°F and heat index values potentially climbing as high as 104°F. Limit strenuous outdoor activity when possible, drink plenty of water, and never leave children or pets unattended in vehicles.

⛈️ SEVERE WEATHER — LATE AFTERNOON & EVENING
Storms are expected to generally hold off until later today. Wheeling is near the southern edge of the Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) area, with the greatest severe threat located northeast of a New Philadelphia-to-Wheeling line.

The primary hazards are:

💨 Damaging winds: The greatest concern. Wheeling is near the transition between the 15–29% and 5–14% probabilities for severe wind gusts of at least 58 mph within 25 miles.
🧊 Large hail: Severe hail of 1 inch or larger is possible. Wheeling is near the 5–14% probability area.
🌪️ Isolated tornadoes: Possible with the strongest storms, although the higher tornado probability shown by the NWS is primarily north and northeast of Wheeling.
🌧️ Heavy downpours: Torrential rainfall may accompany stronger storms and could cause localized flooding or poor visibility.

⚠️ ANOTHER ROUND POSSIBLE THURSDAY
Thursday currently carries a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) for Wheeling and much of the region. The NWS expects more widespread thunderstorms capable of producing damaging winds, large hail, heavy downpours and even a tornado, primarily during the late afternoon and evening.

Additional thunderstorms are possible Friday, although the severe threat is currently lower and generally at the Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 5) level.

The National Weather Service Pittsburgh has issued an updated briefing this morning highlighting severe weather potential Tuesday evening, Wednesday, and again Thursday across the region. Wheeling and Ohio County, WV will need to remain weather-aware through the middle of the week.

For the Wheeling/Ohio County area:

🌡️ HOT & HUMID: Temperatures will climb through midweek. Wheeling has about a 60% chance of reaching 90°F or higher Wednesday and a 35% chance Thursday. Heat index values across the region could reach the mid to upper 90s.
⛈️ TUESDAY EVENING/OVERNIGHT: Severe thunderstorms are possible. The primary threats are damaging winds, large hail and heavy downpours. Wheeling is within the lower-probability severe wind/hail area, while the greatest threat is farther north.
⚠️ WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON/EVENING: This continues to be the period of particular concern. The region is under a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5), with the greatest threat northeast of a line from New Philadelphia to Wheeling.
💨 WEDNESDAY HAZARDS: Damaging winds, large hail, heavy downpours and isolated tornadoes are all possible. Current NWS graphics place Wheeling near the southern edge of the higher wind/hail probabilities. The tornado probability is higher primarily north and northeast of Wheeling.
⚠️ THURSDAY: Another Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) covers Wheeling and much of the surrounding region. Current concerns are damaging winds and large hail, mainly during the late afternoon and evening.

Wheeling is currently in a Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 5). Thunderstorms are possible this evening and overnight, with the main concerns being damaging winds, large hail and heavy downpours. The greatest severe threat tonight is farther north.

⚠️ WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON & EVENING — SEPT. 2
A Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) extends to the Wheeling area, with the greatest threat northeast of a line from New Philadelphia to Wheeling.
