Sexual Assault Help Center

Sexual Assault Help Center SAHC provides advocacy services for victims of sexual violence in northern West Virginia.

The Sexual Assault Help Center is currently in its 44th year of providing services to victims of sexual assault/violence. What began as a one-person agency has evolved into a paid professional staff and a group of volunteers who are dedicated, trained and qualified. These individuals provide a 24 hour a day, 365-days a year crisis toll-free victim hotline. Victim services include

- crisis interv

ention (phone and person to person);
- information, referrals (legal, medical, psychological, police and protection services
- assistance in completing victim’s compensation filing
- case consultation with other service providers including follow-up advocacy for primary and secondary victims
- supportive counseling
- support groups
- volunteer advocacy
- information programs on services offered and issues related to sexual violence
- Community outreach and prevention programming for schools, businesses, organizations, individuals and families

The Sexual Assault Help Center is unique and provides services for sexual assault primary and secondary victims. These specific services are not duplicated in our service area and are therefore greatly needed, recognized, and utilized. There is no other rape crisis center in the Northern Panhandle of West Virginia. For the future and health of our community, we must continue to respond to these growing needs related to sexual violence in a supportive and proactive manner in the Ohio Valley.

It can be hard to know what to do if someone you care for has experienced a traumatic situation, or in some cases, multiple traumatic situations. However, despite how confusing or intimidating it may seem, there is a lot you can do to support those in your life who are affected by trauma without specialized training or knowledge, and here are just a few of them. Sometimes, all someone needs is to have someone listen to their story and validate the way they feel without judgment. If you or anyone you know ever needs to talk to someone, you can call our 24-hour hotline at 1-800-884-7242 to speak with an advocate.

When someone experiences a traumatic situation or event, it changes the structure of their brain on a microscopic, cellular, and molecular level. Due to this change in structure, it can impact the way the person's brain functions. After experiencing trauma, those affected by it may experience difficulties regulating emotions, encoding/storing/retrieving both short-term and long-term memories, and may impact the ability to set goals or anticipate future needs. What someone's brain deems as traumatic can vary from person to person, and all trauma, no matter how "big" or "small," can still alter the lives of those affected. If you or anyone you know ever needs to talk to someone, you can call our 24-hour hotline at 1-800-884-7242 to speak with an advocate.
