My gratitude goes out to everyone at Town of Greenburgh, Hartsdale Fire Department , Fairview Fire Rescue et al who made this year's Greenburgh Veterans BBQ such a success.

Thank you to my fellow electeds Rep. George Latimer, Assemblymember MaryJane Shimsky and Jewel Williams Johnson for joining me in addressing the substantial crowd at Anthony F. Veterans Park in the Village of Ardsley. But most importantly, it was enormously meaningful to spend an afternoon with veterans representing all branches of our armed forces whose sacrifices have spanned several decades across numerous global conflict zones.

We are all in debt to your courage and conviction.

Westchester County Government's Department of Health wants to hear from anyone who has had recent contact with a large, aggressive and possibly rabid coyote that has been seen in over the past few days.

The coyote attacked a woman on the path near in on Wednesday evening. It remains at large. The woman is being treated preventively for rabies after the coyote bit her ankle.

Per Health Commissioner Dr. Sherlita Amler: “Anyone who sees the coyote should not approach the animal but should contact police immediately. Make loud noises and slowly back away. Due to its aggressive behavior, the coyote may be rabid. Residents should closely supervise children and pets when outside.”

Hastings and Ferry police, along with animal-control officers from Town of Greenburgh, are actively looking for the animal and consulting with the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation Police.

Unusual behavior may be the first sign of rabies in an animal. A rabid animal may become either abnormally aggressive or unusually tame. It may lose fear of people and become excited and irritable, or appear particularly passive and lethargic. Staggering and frothing at the mouth are sometimes noted.

Residents who see any stray or wild animal acting strangely should avoid contact with the animal and alert local authorities to avoid possible exposure to rabies. Residents are also advised to keep their trash can lids securely sealed and avoid leaving pet food outdoors.

Any physical contact with a wild or unfamiliar animal should be reported to a health care provider. All animal bites or contacts with animals suspected of having rabies must be reported to the Westchester County Department of Health at (914) 813-5000, 24 hours a day.

Keeping pet rabies vaccinations up to date is also important for protection against rabies. New York State law requires dogs, cats and ferrets to be vaccinated against rabies and receive regular booster shots. Some of you may have already received an e-news alert from my office (you can subscribe here: https://www.westchesterlegislatorsny.gov/district-12-enews-subscribe), but it bears repeating is urging residents to prepare for a strong coastal storm expected to impact the region from Friday through Sunday, with the potential for heavy rain, strong winds and coastal flooding.

While the storm’s exact track and impacts are still being monitored, Sound Shore communities should prepare for the possibility of moderate coastal flooding.

Additionally, heavy rain, strong winds, high tides and a full moon could increase flooding in low-lying and flood-prone coastal areas.

Communities throughout the rest of Westchester should also prepare for periods of heavy rain and strong winds.

You can be reassured that Westchester County Government's Department of Emergency Services is monitoring the storm and its Departments of Public Works and Transportation and Public Safety are prepared to respond as needed.

Nevertheless, residents are encouraged to take precautions and avoid unnecessary travel during severe weather. Motorists should never drive around barricades or attempt to drive through standing or moving water.

This past weekend, I had the distinction of joining my Westchester County Board of Legislators colleague Anant Nambia State Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins and members of the County's community -- whose heritage has its roots in the Indian state of -- at the Yonkers Malayalee Association's 25th annual harvest-festival celebration.

From traditional rhythmic drum sessions to the customary national dishes served on banana leaf, it was another reminder of how truly culturally enriched we are in .

I recently gathered with fellow elected officials including Andrea Stewart-Cousins, Ken Jenkins, Rep. George Latimer and Assemblymember MaryJane Shimsky to celebrate the Hastings-on-Hudson Volunteer Fire Department's 150th Anniversary and Department Annual Inspection this weekend Harvest On Hudson.
