Habitat for Humanity of New Castle County has developed more than 60 properties in the City of Wilmington through the State's Brownfield Remediation program, including 21 townhomes at a single location, our largest project on one site.

Our CEO Kevin L. Smith is presenting that work at the Delaware Brownfield Conference on Thursday, August 20, during the Success Stories lunch sponsored by Brightfields Inc., a Terraphase company. He'll walk through what it actually takes to move a contaminated, long-vacant parcel into homes that families own.

Land that sat unused for years now holds front doors, front steps, and neighbors building equity in the city they already call home.

It's National and if you ask a Habitat parent what kept them going through the application, the classes, and the sweat equity hours, the answer is usually their kids.

Jamal A., the first graduate of our Almost Home Rental Program, wanted a safe and peaceful place where his two children could grow and truly feel at home. "Giving back the way I was blessed," is how he described what partnering with Habitat means to him.

Habitat's homeowner impact research found that more than half of homeowners with children saw their kids' grades improve after moving in, and even more reported better study habits at home. Forty years in, 330 New Castle County families have built that same foundation.
