💧 Backflow Awareness: Protecting Our Drinking Water 💧

Did you know that some businesses, irrigation systems, and facilities are required to have a Reduced Pressure (RP) Backflow Prevention Device installed on their water service?

An RP device helps protect our public water system by preventing contaminated water from flowing backward into the drinking water supply. This can occur when there is a sudden drop in water pressure caused by a water main break, firefighting activities, or other system demands.

Why are RP devices important?

Throughout this month, we’re focusing on the importance of backflow prevention and the simple devices that help protect our community’s drinking water.

This week’s feature: Hose Bib Vacuum Breakers (HBVBs)

A hose bib vacuum breaker is a small device that screws onto outdoor faucets and helps prevent contaminated water from flowing backward into the public water system. These devices are an easy and important way to help keep drinking water safe.

You’ll commonly find vacuum breakers on:
• Outdoor hose bibs (garden faucets)
• Irrigation and sprinkler systems
• Commercial plumbing systems
• Boilers or equipment water lines

HBVBs are especially useful for applications such as:
• Filling swimming pools
• Filling chemical tanks
• Filling cattle troughs
• Using pressure washers with soaps or detergents

By preventing backflow, these devices help protect clean water supplies and support safe, compliant water use. The good news is they are affordable, easy to install, and commonly available at most hardware stores.

At Wi******er Utility System, protecting the quality of your drinking water is a responsibility we take seriously. Throughout June, we’ll be sharing information about backflow prevention and the important role it plays in safeguarding our community’s water supply.

What is backflow?
Backflow occurs when water flows in the opposite direction from its intended path due to a sudden change in water pressure. This can happen during events such as water main breaks, firefighting activities, or periods of heavy water use. When backflow occurs, contaminants from irrigation systems, pools, private plumbing systems, and other sources can potentially enter the public water supply.

Our water crew is currently on site on Worm Ridge working to restore service as quickly and safely as possible. At this time, we do not have an estimated time for repairs to be completed.

🚨 WATER OUTAGE NOTICE 🚨

Workers have hit our water lines, causing a leak in the area of Knights Church Road and Old Alto Highway.

Customers in the surrounding areas may experience low water pressure or a temporary loss of water service while repairs are being made.

Our water crew is on site and working diligently to resolve the issue as quickly and safely as possible. At this time, there is no estimated time for repairs to be completed.

Last night and into the early morning hours, our employees once again showed what true dedication to this community looks like. During a major water leak repair, members of our water crew worked in extremely difficult conditions — including water nearly over their heads — to make sure full water service was restored as quickly and safely as possible for our customers.

While most people were asleep, these men were out in the dark and dangerous conditions doing whatever it took to get the job done. That same dedication is something we see across all departments at our utility every single day. From long hours to emergency calls and missed time with their families, our employees continue to put this community first no matter the circumstances.

We are incredibly proud of the hardworking employees who keep things running day and night. Their commitment, sacrifice, and willingness to serve do not go unnoticed, and our community is fortunate to have people who care this much about the work they do.
