A new month means more pets and families will need help.

Every day, pet parents face difficult choices when veterinary care costs more than they can afford. For many, their pet is their companion, their comfort, and part of what makes home feel like home.

At One Health, we help eligible families access veterinary care so pets can stay healthy and at home with the people who love them.

Your support helps make that possible.

As National Pet Month comes to a close, we’re celebrating all the ways pets make life better.

They bring comfort on hard days, joy in ordinary moments, and love that asks for very little in return. They remind us to slow down, get outside, laugh more, and care deeply.

At One Health, we see every day how powerful the bond between pets and people can be. That bond is why access to veterinary care matters, and why we work to help pets stay healthy at home with the people who love them.

After years of service, and after experiencing deep personal loss, Robert found steady companionship in Shadow.

Robert, a retired Marine Corps captain and Vietnam veteran, was grieving the loss of his wife and his longtime Labrador when Shadow came into his life. She had been abandoned as a puppy, brought to Cleveland, and eventually became the service dog Robert needed.

With help from One Health Veterinary Care Vouchers, Robert was able to keep Shadow healthy with important veterinary care and vaccinations.

Their story is a reminder that caring for pets also means caring for the people who depend on them for comfort, stability, and love.

Did you know? More than 90% of One Health’s funding comes from individual donors.

That means our work is powered by people who care.

People who believe a pet should not go without care because their family is facing financial hardship. People who understand how much comfort, stability, and love pets bring into a home.

Behind every number is a pet who received care, and a family who did not have to face a difficult moment alone.

Yuck. Tick season is here. 🕷️

Ticks may be tiny, but they can carry serious diseases that affect pets and people. After walks, hikes, or backyard playtime, it’s important to check your pets carefully — especially around the ears, neck, paws, and underarms.

Prevention and early removal can help keep pets healthy all season long.

When Valerie’s dog Winston needed care, she was told she had two options: expensive surgery or saying goodbye.

But Valerie was not ready to give up on him.

Living on Social Security and managing her own health challenges, she applied for One Health’s Veterinary Care Vouchers. When funding became available, she was able to use her vouchers at Kirtland Veterinary Hospital, where Winston received care and a treatment plan that worked.

Today, Winston is still by Valerie’s side.

Their story is a powerful reminder of why access to veterinary care matters.

May is Arthritis Awareness Month, and it’s a good reminder to pay attention to our pets’ comfort and mobility too.

If your dog is slowing down, limping, struggling to get comfortable, or hesitating on walks, arthritis or joint pain could be part of the reason.

Knowing the signs early can help pets stay more comfortable and active.

Why One Health exists starts with a story.

Our founder, Anna M. van Heeckeren, DVM, MS, shares part of that story in Love Notes from the Soul 2.0, including the experiences that shaped her belief in expanding access to veterinary care.

Her chapter, “Because Pets Are Family,” reflects the heart of our work: helping pets stay healthy and at home with the people who love them.
