You may notice York Police Department officers stationed at crosswalks around town as students and families settle into the new school year.

We’re asking everyone to slow down, stay alert, obey posted speed limits, and follow all traffic laws—especially near schools and crosswalks.

Remember when a school bus has its stop arm extended and red lights flashing, STOP. Never pass a stopped school bus when children are loading or unloading. Give our students the time and space they need to cross safely.

A few extra seconds of patience can make a big difference in keeping kids safe. Let’s work together to make it a safe school year, York!

As students and staff head back to the classroom, the York Police Department wishes everyone a safe, successful, and fun school year!

We’re also excited to introduce Officer Mostrom as our new School Resource Officer (SRO) for this school year. Ofc. Mostrom is looking forward to building relationships with students, staff, and families while helping keep our schools safe.

Ofc. Geesaman and Ofc. Keller traded the patrol cars for some tractors at the York County Fair!

We always enjoy getting out in the community, visiting with everyone, and taking in everything the fair has to offer.

Today, the York Police Department extends our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and members of Chief Young’s and the Crete Police Department.

Chief Young generously shared his time and expertise by assisting with the York Police Department’s recent Sergeant promotional process. His professionalism, leadership, and commitment to developing law enforcement leaders made a lasting impact, and we are grateful for his service and collaboration.

Our thoughts and prayers are with all who knew and served alongside him during this difficult time. Rest in peace, Chief Young.

City of Crete departments and staff are deeply saddened by the passing yesterday, July 27, of Chief of Police Gary Young. He served the Crete Police Department honorably for 41 years and was appointed Chief in 2022. A true public servant, Young was dedicated to the safety of his community and worked hard to make sure the department and officers in his command were successful in meeting the needs of residents. His commitment to the highest ideals of law enforcement and service to the Crete community will not be forgotten.

The thoughts of City of Crete staff are with his family, friends, and fellow officers during this difficult time.

**UPDATE** Ariyah has been located by law enforcement and is safe! Thank you to everyone that called in with information regarding her whereabouts.

The York Police Department is currently investigating a report of a missing/runaway juvenile.

Ariyah Tapio was reported a missing/runaway juvenile on July 26th, 2026. This is an active investigation and officers are currently working to locate the juvenile and ensure her safe return. On July 27th, 2026, officers determined that Ariyah was in Lincoln Nebraska. We are asking for the public's assistance and anyone with information regarding the juvenile's whereabouts is encouraged to contact the York Police Department. If you have an immediate sighting, please call 911. At this time, we are currently trying to locate Ariyah Tapio and want to encourage her to return home. There is no indication that she is in danger or her safety is at risk.

Additional information will be released as it becomes available and as appropriate.

The York Police Department has had an increase of calls regarding potential scams and false advertisments on Facebook Marketplace. We ask the public to be cautious and if any advertisement you may be involved in seems questionable, please do not send money without verifying the authenticity of the advertisement. If you have questions regarding any advertisement that you feel is suspicious, contact your local law enforcement agency.

The police department would like to announce the promotion of Riley Friesen to sergeant. Riley has worked for the York Police Department for 6 years as a police officer since his employment began in 2020.

Riley has served as YPDs first school resource officer, has completed training with the FBI LEEDA supervision leadership institute, is a public information officer and is also a field training officer within the department. We look forward to seeing Riley excel in his new role.
