FUN FACT FRIDAY 🎥: "OUR TOWN"

"Although we did not live in the borough, Kennett Square was our town. My parents knew almost everyone. My father was on the board of the only bank in town (he had been president during the depression). My mother chaired the corporation board of the Kennett New Century Club and belonged to a garden club and a card club. We went to five doctors and a dentist in Kennett and did all our food shopping there. We frequented the drug store, the barbershop, the Kennett Kitchen restaurant and the auditorium theatre. I have many fond memories of times in Kennett when I was growing up in the 1930s." Tom Marshall, How It Was.

Attention Trail Users- Oversee Farm Trail

The Oversee Farm Trail will be temporarily closed today, Friday, 8/28 while park staff clear downed trees and debris, resulting from yesterday‘s heavy downpour.

We apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your understanding as we work to safely clear and maintain the trail.

As an alternative, we recommend the Auburn Valley Trail, which offers a similar trail experience scenic parkland. Parking is available via Benge Road and Farm Lane.

If you have walked around our estate, you may have noticed the Rose Arbour.

Our naturalist, Macy, captured these beautiful pictures of multiflora rose. 🌹

Fun facts:

They belong to the same family as apples, cherries, and strawberries.
They are originally from East Asia, specifically Japan, Korea, and parts of China.
They were introduced to the U.S. in the 1800s.
They are at their best bloom from May–June.

Our naturalist at AVSP captured this beautiful picture of a Monarch Butterfly. 🦋

Fun Facts about Monarch Butterflies:

1. Monarch Butterflies are dependent on milkweed for survival.
2. Adult monarchs can spread pollen while gathering nectar from milkweed flowers.
3. During September and October, monarchs begin their southern migration.

Our naturalist Macy captured these amazing photos of the lovely deer. If you are a visitor of our park, you may have also spotted them on your walks or drives!

Fun facts about deer in Delaware🦌:

- White-tailed deer were almost wiped out by the mid-1800s, leading Delaware to ban deer hunting for almost over 100 years.

- Deer are strong swimmers; they can paddle through water up to 15 miles per hour.🌊🦌

- Most deer in Delaware are the classic brown, but you may occasionally spot a "piebald" that has white and brown patches.

✨Hidden in Plain Sight at Auburn Heights Pt. 9✨

Esther Marshall's glasses can be found in the Waverly room at AH.

These appear to be vintage Windsor-style round wire-rim glasses. These glasses date to approximately 1920-1930s.

Muller & Fenton was an optical business located in Center City, Philadelphia. They sold prescription glasses and lenses and repaired them, as it was common in the early-to-mid 1900s. The company is no longer in business, but we know Esther was a loyal customer to Muller & Fenton, as we have found more cases with more of her glasses.
